H15/H7 New Bulbs Purchased

Featured Replies

My 2016 Octavia Scout has the standard Halogen headlights, and I find them pretty useless.

it seems from the forums that I’m

not alone.

Anyhow, with the dark nights now well and truly on us I have just ordered some upgrade bulbs.

It is very limited with the H15 bulb, hardly any choice but I have gone for some Osram Cool Blue Intense.

These seem about the best H15 upgrade. I have some current  ‘supposed’ upgrade ones I got off eBay and whilst very white/Blue they are hopeless and certainly no better than the standard H15.

For the H7 main beam I’ve gone for these; https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/h7-twenty20-daylight-120-12v-55w-477-halogen-bulbs-pair.html

had a mention in Auto Express magazines bulb test and 40% off on a Black Friday deal, £14.99 a pair.

Once they’ve arrived I’ll let you know how they compare.

Anyone got these or other recommendations?

Phillips 130% or Osram night breakers

@Dinesy you are going to have possible 4 different colour lights on the front of the car

1.the original H8 fog light

2. the new H15 DLR light

3. the new H15 main beam light

4. the new H7 dipped beam light

The DLR brightness level can be altered by VCDS though, I brought MTEC super white super bright bulbs for my old mk3 as they were the only ones I could find that were the same colour.

The human eye won't be able to differentiate less than 200k difference in colour temperature though, I haven't looked up your bulbs for comparison

Thanks for that.

Fogs I probably won’t bother with, or I may go for the Euro style yellow bulbs just to be different!

The h15,s are 3700k Im interested to see what the DLR looks like, he h7’s ... No idea, although they are very white apparently!

If they light the road up then I won’t be too disappointed, because at the moment it’s hopeless!

Yeah the MTEC's were 4,350k IIRC so those 3,700 aren't gonna look white but hopefully, you'll get more range which will make things safer. I remember some very dodgy night driving, certainly didn't feel confident ragging it in the dark

if you want a pair of the correct colour MTEC 4500K H8s, PM me i have four of the above mentioned wrongly purchased when i needed H16s for the vRS.

Can I ask what you think about LED conversions and are they legal, I know HID's aren't.

I was looking at the H7 LED bulb that Auto Bulbs Direct sell. It’s a bulb replacement as opposed to a conversion. I haven’t looked but I’d imagine the conversion is expensive. Unless it’s type approved and e marked then it won’t be legal. I always work on the basis of this being fine from a day to day point of view as the likelihood of being stopped and a copper having the relevant specific knowledge is slim. Your insurance company on the other hand when dealing with a claim, particularly if your car is inspected would be a different matter. I’d they can get out of paying any claim I’m pretty sure they will?!

Yeah that was my understanding of the HID so a conversion wouldn’t be clever but the replacement might be ok.

Bulbs arrived today and fitted. All round a huge improvement.

H15 Osram Cool Blue Intense are much better than the standards, brighter and a much sharper ‘cut offf’ on the low beam.

The H7 20 Twenty Daylights are good, very bright and the same colour as the H15’s. Give a much better reach of light than the standard H7’s. They claim 120% brighter than standard and I wouldn’t argue with that. For £14.99 they are a good buy.
