Keeping the Octavia Frost Free

Featured Replies

Hi

I was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations of a car cover/frost guard/other inventive ideas for keeping the windscreen and windows from freezing up overnight. It's become such a pain scraping the ice off the car over the past few weeks.

Thank you :)

A garage ;)

I've seen half top covers that hide glass surfaces all around together with windscreen wipers and can be as low to cover the locks also.

Protect from ice and snow and simply by shaking it can be clean enough to store it the back compartnment.

You should find solutions in local shops of auto-accessories etc..

Just a front windscreen cover helps a fair bit as that is the one that tends to have the thickest frost. Then you can just deal with the remaining. A lot quicker in the mornings...

Unfortunately that isn't an option for me :(

Do you have any recommendations for covers? I'm only asking because reviews seem to be fairly mixed and I would rather use a tried and tested product. Or are they all pretty much the same?

My garage is like an Igloo, F**kin Freezing. I had a colony of penquins in mine last year then the polar bear came and ate them.

Split a large thick cardboard box out flat and if necessary, cut it to your car's windscreen size and shape, so that it covers the entire screen. Very easy to remove and put on in a second or two, dries out during the day time on the porch. I did this for my MkII, having come from a Mondeo with heated front screen. It stayed on during all weathers and didn't mark the paint. My MkIII has a heated screen so I don't need a cover anymore. .

Any space for a car port? Covers and such are just a faff, I would rather scrape the car than start dragging covers about

Polar bears don't eat penguins.

They cannae get the wrappers Aff!

Plus polar bears live in the Arctic, and penguins live in the Antarctic.

I once used a cover that went over the top half of the vehicle (covered all the windows) it was such a faff to put on and take off. Even worse when blowin a hoolie, or snowing!

Before I got my carport installed I used something similar to this;

Feckin auto****** strikes again!

Not sure where I got our tarpaulin type material covers but we had them for years. Simply covers the screen(well just about as Octy screen is huge) and wraps into the 2 front doors to keep it in place. If fitted really low, no ice near the wipers  so can get away with no scraping the screen. The likes of Poundland do similar cheapo covers. I scrape the side windows and use the heated rear screen with some assisted scraping to the rear. The larger the cover the harder it is to store and dry. I would love to cover more of the car, then that's more of a wet cover to dry or store.

I've seen Penquins at Chester Zoo

@Squible I just used a cheap one I got off ebay through summer and winter for over two year and it was fine. You need to check sizes though as the Oct 2 front screen is large.  Eventually, it started to fall apart but it was only £3 or £4. When I went back to buy again they were £10 or more!

So then I just bought a Halfords foil type one. I used it for the first time last night ,as the previous night was a huge frost but, this morning there was no frost but I'm sure it will do the trick as others have pointed out cardboard works too.....

Now we know you are exaggerating. Polar bears and penguins are poles apart, so to speak

Thank you all for the advice. I think I'll find something to cover the windscreen and see how it goes!

There are some liquids that help to defrost - can be helpful only for the windows. You need to spray it in the morning and the frost will be mostly gone in 30-60 seconds . It seems to be effective down to -5 , -7 celsius

I see that you want to avoid it before all is frozen but it can be alternative solution :)

Or when parking up pre-frost, Halfords and other have Night before / Pre-icer.

& Silicone Spray for the spraying on rubber door and hatch seals.
