low frequency motor sound

Featured Replies

when i start up the engine there is a rather low frequency sound which seems to be from the drivers side just to the right of centre of the steering wheel

when i rev up it goes and when returning to idle...it gradually comes back there is some slight resonance as well about 1 cycle per second.

i listened from the engine side with the bonnet up but there is no sound there...i thought it might have been the drive belt but that was fitted new in april this year...

so i thought there might be an electrical motor somewhere under the dash..something to do with the climatronic unit for this reason.

i am using more now for heat and only using the foot arrow button...or the blast the screen button...once used the recirculation button as well....the temp is set at 20 degrees.

what i have noticed when completing a say 20 mile journey and parking up at home i switch off the engine but a 'motor/fan' seems to run on a bit for around 20 seconds...

i looked on an old briskoda thread and see some suggestions about resetting the unit by pressing this button and that button...

would welcome any advice

ps

i got the car in may this year with 76k on the clock and the full service history, but nowhere in the book is mentioned a/c servicing

i am getting it done in a few weeks..so do you think this may be a contributing factor

the cold aircon section works a fine....and really the hot as well...

its good to have a constant temp control

never got an answer to this...either its obvious or i didnt read the manual!!

any ideas...basically when i turn off the ignition the engine stops...but there is something still spinning on for a few seconds longer and sounds like what i imagine is a fan?

if you chaps think its cancer please let me know...so i can get one of those funeral plans toot sweet

any takers...

On the 1.2tsi petrols there is an electrical water run on pump that continues after the engine stops for about a minute. Presumably its to cool the turbo. I can see the water returning to the expansion tank during this period.

Finally I'm not alone! I did the same this evening as I'veheard it for years but no-one else claims to hear anything.

Like a metallic revolution noise that gets more prominent the longer the engine has been running?

Doesn't seem to speed up or slow down I can't hear it in the engine bay either but can in the car.

Does anyone else know?

I know you may get a fuel return pump noise so it MAY be that. Also, the radiator fans on many cars runs on after the engine is switched off, to allow additional, quicker cooling of the engine. Some cars run on, others don't! There are often lots of flap/motor noises that emirate from the dash, with all the directional flaps etc of the interior fan. Can be a bit disconcerting and my partner (Bless her) Always mentions she can hear a scraping/spinning noise coming from the central vent. Goes away if I turn the fan up. I say its just the fan running at a lower speed, sped it up, it sounds just like a fan but when the temp is stable and it is on a lower setting by nature, it sounds more noticeably or distinct!

I think you are most likely hearing something that is "Normal" But the instant you pick the sound out, it will sound ten times louder until, eventually, you forget again!

thats a good summary

i have found when i leave the driver door on and switch on the ignition i can hear the fuel pump ticking away...which i dont think i can hear when the door is shut!! but its still there...not quite what you were indicating except now i know what it is...i can forget it...the pump is still working...

ps it sounds like its in the same position as the golf...under the rear seats...?

I believe you are right. it is a common place to put them these days. The seats lift really easily so try popping it up and out of the way and have another listen. With the seat not blocking the pump, you may hear it more. I am unsure if there is a separate fuel return pump or if the pump just "Reverses" The fuel flow.

on my petrol 2001 golf 1.6 16V it had a fuel circlatory system iirc...so the pump became the ring main and the engine the demand point...

it would seem this would work ok on a diesel as well...and a vw engined car.

on marine applications with small diesels...i think the gas oil was taken of a reservoir to the fuel pumps which fed the injectors under pressure....for what its worth

with time and being reassured i now hardly notice the sound...actually since i got my aircon serviced it sounds quieter...

How much/where did you get thee a/c serviced?  (Local or chain) And what was the reason? Thanks. (Think I need mine re-gassed).

£45 to gas, 15 to clean out the bugs, total 60 +vat...£72

it was a local..highly recommend as a friendly garage...gives advice and smiles.. and fully trained a/c operative

3 chaps doing repairs, tyres, and mot’s as well

Halfords is just around the bend a bit....but they overwhelm me

ps I use similar friendly garage for servicing....where I bought the car..

good luck

Thats a small but significant sing over the main dealer although just recently, they offered brake fluid change, re-gas and debac, with a car wash, for £99. My local London branch didn't take part as their overheads are way too high! Just an air con service alone is around £85

I will be getting a brake fluid change but get it next March with the mot and service

what i like about owner garages is they chat and cut a bit of banter and your money means a lot to them...and I want them to be there next year.

True... I tend to use a local guy for stuff I can't do either due to skill (Or lack of) Or time. He does MOT tests for £39, plus if you fail, its free! Pay when you fix and return. He has a wee look/drive to test faults, free as he knows he will most likely get the job anyway. Also, he will try to fit me in asap as he knows mine is a working car, not just a commuter! It all adds up! (Thanks Rob, Mars Motors, Mile End)!

My son in law Issam, is a Uber man in Bristol...drives a ....yes a skoda superb i think...its a great machine

my daughter drives a fabia 1 and has Issam's old fabia 1 as back up...they got me onto skoda and i must admit after having a vw golf for 15 years, then a kia rio for 8 months.!!! i was well glad to get back into something that tasted and smelled VW

when i looked at the fabia 14.Tdi the first thing i noticed was the main lighting switch...just like my vw golf and not a bunch of knitting needles like the kia....all so simple and practical...

bought it that week after it was valetted and mot'd/serviced..i did the tax myself and forked out £30 for the year, which i do now at 2.62p a month...= 1 costa americano

it wont stop returning 56-60 mpg on my 40 mile round trips...thanks to that product advised here..

i use along with its once a year treatment 6400

cheers
