SAAB to Skoda conversion?

Continuing thanks for all your feedback..........

@edwards per my previous post, despite 10 years ownership (of a nearly 14 year old car) I don't yet feel that I simply have to buy something else. The SAAB still delivers on performance, comfort, space and economy is not too bad even after nearly 160,000 miles (this car uses no oil!) and the financial argument is hard to beat (see previous post above). I keep considering where to go next, but there seems to be no 'slam-dunk' answer.

However, I remain open-minded and continue to look - at some point soon I will need to move. A Skoda Superb Combi has attractions, but petrol variants are DSG only (I have reservations about 'automatics', but maybe that's my historical prejudice although VAG DSG boxes have a somewhat chequered history from what I read).

I've characterised by position in a previous posting, so (people) space is not a big issue (although carrying bikes and adventure sports gear is). I had a SAAB 900 NG Turbo Hatch in 1997-2000 (which I think used the Vector floorpan) and that was rarely too small (mainly two passengers only). A Superb with 280bhp and 4x4 has a certain attraction, but that pushes up the ticket price and reduces mpg to what, about 25-30? I'm not sure that level of performance can be used much. I gives great 'bragging rights' (no offence intended), but the 220bhp engine is probably enough for 95% of the time, but again, its DSG only. Also, having decided to retire early I manage my finances pretty carefully, so it has to make financial sense -- depreciation is a big hit for zero return.

It's going to difficult for me to make any progress until I take a few test drives, but feel free to throw more ideas/experiences at me - they are appreciated.
