280 Weird suspension / tyre prob

Featured Replies

OK I don't really know how to put this into words.... I'm not even convinced there is a problem myself yet....

You know when you really know your car well and something suddenly doesn't feel right ......

Well... Over the past couple of weeks the steering has felt a bit ... Odd.... Checked tyre pressures. OK.

The steering just feels a bit ... Hard to describe. ... Vague ?

Plus when I have a fair bit of lock on it feels a bit like the tyre kind of skips and it makes a noise. I've wondered if it was due to the colder weather. Tyre compound harder and slipper roads.

Thing is I cant remember feeling it last winter.

Wondered if I've hit a pothole but cant remember hitting any severe holes. If it continues I may book her in for a laser alignment but reading online this can also be a bit hit and miss....

Any ideas ? Anyone else have similar ?

Tracking or ball joint wear, track rod end, inner tie rod, wishbone bushes.

That's all the up front things that can cause vagueness.

Mmmmm... Well that cant be good at 14k miles and just over 2 years old ! Lets hope its the tracking !

If there is no noise/knocking associated with it then I call it a feature

Maybe lol ! No knocking.... But it has changed... and that's sets my OCD Alarm ringing ... I'll see what happens... 5 Year warranty so no panic ;-)

Do not let them fix your car if any fault,

but at least pull into a Fast Flit Dancing prancing tyre and exhaust centre and let them do a 'Free safety inspection under your vehicle',

suspension , brakes, inside tyre walls,

just not a Tracking Check, because even free, they will then want to do a Not Free adjustment.

You should then have an idea if the car is safe.

Then go get your Alignment check with someone with the gear and more than an idea.

Tyre pressures first. Check for a broken spring.

Age makes no difference though. Things can fail day1 with maufacturers defects

Yeah Pressures OK. I'll get it on the ramps at the weekend if I can be arsed and have a look. No uneven tyre wear or feathering.

At a guess I would say tyres being more worn than last year and the weather is colder too compared to last which was mild

I would say tyres also. Summer tyre compounds go really hard at temps below 7 deg.

Yes guys could very well be this...

Pulsing through the steering wheel probably means alignment issues.hit kurb recently result was replaced tie rod ends and trackrod also needed radar reset as a result.

Wot depth on the tyres. Below 3 towards 2 , great diff in feeling in wet cold weather.

If ye can put mich pilot 4's on , what a diff they make. Best tyre ever and i'll gladly fight anyone who says different.

Do you mean a juddering/stickyness coming through the steering when turning lock to lock (at slow speed)?

If so that sounds similar to worn/faulty inner steering rod(s) that afflicted so many fabia ii around 2013

Yeah it does feel a bit like that ... Although not noticed as much in the past few days... Increased temp ?

I'll keep you all posted ..

Might be the same thing, might not...  My old 3-series x-drive used to slip wheels when our street was frosty and on full lock (not on winter boots) whilst doing a three point turn in the road.  Just put it down to a quirk of the situation, clearly the x-drive system was doing it's job as it would only give me momentary slips and was taking power away from the wheel.  Never had the issue when road wasn't "slippy".
