2006 Fabia rear door cable broken

Featured Replies

Hi

This car is a basic model with manual door locking (no central locking).  The rear door can no longer be opened from inside.  On removing the inner trim panel I can see that the inner cable of the Bowden cable is broken, about an inch from the nipple that connects to the door lever.  Does anybody know if this is straightforward to replace?  Also is it likely to be caused by seizure of part of the mechanism or just by wear of the cable?  The door opens OK from the outside.  Part number and/or cost would be appreciated, if anybody knows them.

I thought this might be a common problem, but I couldn't find it through searching, although I did find some good pics for an Octavia, which looks similar.

It would be straightforward to replace, if yours was an earlier car where the ancillaries carrier was bolted on rather than riveted. Unfortunately, yours will be riveted, so you'd have to drill those out to get to the lock end of the Bowden cable, then re-rivet once your repair is done.

Looks like item 13 on this page is the Bowden cable: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2006-453/8/839-839000/

I've not read of one breaking before. Though ISTR that area is where the inner exits the outer and it's secured to the door card.

As Wino wrote, door carrier will be rivetted on. If DIYing you'll need rivets, Lazy Tong rivetter £25-£45, various pliers and pry tools to remove all of the wiring and sockets to loosen the window clips. Plus, if the carrier seals have ever been repaired, another tube of Plumbers Gold or similar to seal it back up after repair.

As it is, it would be an MOT failure, I think.

Thanks Wino and Vindaloo - that's really helpful.

I have the tools, so I'll get some plumbers gold, order the cable and wait for the weather to warm up a bit.
