Broken door lock

Featured Replies

Help does anybody know how i can get into my old fabia sdi 1.9, my lock barrel went very stiff and when i squirfed some wd40 into it and turned it using the key it went too far to the left. It feels now like something inside has disengaged and i now cannot get into my car as the same thing happened on the passenger side a couple of years back. So aside of breaking the rear quarterlight im stumped as what to do. Any ideas guys. I should also add its a non central locking model, if that helps.

I take it your boot doesn't have a lock you can access so the easiest/least damaging way is by wedging a door corner. Choose a door that has the longest bit of door button sticking up above the inside capping. Front doors are easier than rears as they are more bendy window frames. Make a wooden wedge and use a big screw driver at the rear upper corner of the door. Blade behind the doorframe, fulcrum the top of the door opening. This will strain the rear corner of the door outwards and as you increase the pressure a gap will open that you can stick your wedge in to keep it open. You need about a half inch gap to work through. Depending on the type of door button you can use superstrong welded packaging tape, wire coat hanger with a V or loop bent on the end, even a spot of superglue on a stick to capture the door button and pull it up. Can be a fiddle, can be very easy. Once you have the door open you can remove the lock barrel. There are two grommets in the back edge of the door close to the handle. The upper screw you remove completely. The lower screw winds a rotating mechanism which also holds the lock barrel and must not be undone completely. Put the key in the lock and slightly turn it so I can pull gently on the lock when needed. Then wind the screw out about three turns. Pull on the lock. If it doesn't come wind the screw another half turn and pull again. The lock may come partially free and you often have to pull the exterior door handle to give the lock a bit more room to come out. You may need to turn that screw another quarter turn or so to get the lock out but you do not remove it and if its friction starts to increase you have gone far enough. Once the lock barrel is out you can examine the sprung gubbins and blade that should live on the lock barrel and which will have broken. Replacing the broken bits is cheap but refitting them is a real fiddle.

Don't worry about bending the door frame permanently. It probably will take on a bend but can be easily bent back into shape unless you have pulled it way too far like 3 inches gap.

Only needs loosening or it will fall into the bottom of the door.

If you can wedge the door frame you can maybe use a wire hook to pull up the boot release lever and get in that way.
