The dreaded electric windows.

Featured Replies

First of all, hello all!

done some searching, and from past experience a specific forum can be your best friend, or your worst enemy!

right, 2006 Fabia estate, all was fine until it went to the valeters, here’s the slight query, I used the windows on the way to the valeters 100% and they were fine!

he rang me to say do the windows not work, I obviously said never had an issue, had a regulator cable fail about 6 months ago, other than that fine, he said he changed the fuse and all was ok.

i got it home, windows didn’t work once it was turned off, removing the fuse and refitting it sometimes made them work, but doesn’t seem to any more! Checked the wires in both door boots etc, no faults, both windows stop when it’s not working, and all work fine when they do work.

is it likely to be the motor/control module, or do you think the valeter has maybe got the switches damp??

Cheers

Welcome along :)

As you mentioned, I'm wondering if the valeter got water in the switches. Seems a heck of a coincidence that you'd had no trouble before.

One of the wires will have broken in the loom at the door hinge (poss drivers) ! open the door fully and pull back the rubber boot covering the loom to be able to inspect the individual cables and you could find one (or 2) either snapped fully or just about making contact, from what  I remember there is a plug you can detach at the door hinge, all the best Stuart

He's already inspected the wires in the door bellows.

Yeh, I have found they can be intermittent, I have had it where a door window switch operates the wrong window as the switch gives a certain resistance to the ECU so it could be affected by water, apart from that it could be water in the convenience ECU which I think lives inside the door and goes faulty ? the only way to check the wires is to buzz them out one at a time by removing the door card to expose everything, unplug things and follow the colour coding of the cables as I have had that a couple of times. cheers Stuart

The windows ECU is in the door motor which is behind the door card, not actually inside the door cavity. Just seems a massive coincidence to me that he'd had no trouble prior to the valet.

Yeh your right its the back part of the motor, unless the valet has either pushed the door loom with his vac or opened the door fully to allow better access and finally the wires have broke ! I would check the looms again as that's all I can think of especially the driver door as its the most used and control cables as well as main power go through it, if it was very cold when it was done the plastic insulation on the cables goes stiff ! cheers Stuart

Looks like your windows popped out Lee with the grommets missing ?

That is a pic from when I was taking the door carrier off to fix the microswitch. I'd taken the grommets out to get to the window bolts :)

Had another look today, stripped the door card off and the rubber boot, there were two wires with nicks in the coating, but weren’t broke, replaced them anyway, no different, removed the plug onto the motor and refit it and they worked until I turned the ignition off again!

thinking it can only be that unit, presuming it’s plug and play?? Price one so will order it up next week.

cheers.

Strange things happening to mine now too. It had been parked all last night and today and I just noticed that the passenger front window had gone down on its own! Good job it wasn't raining or parked away from home. Never had any problems with it up to now. Not exactly ideal never knowing if the windows are going to open themselves. Better keep an eye on it.
