How to Remove Rear Bumper?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum.  Have been reading posts for a while and found it useful.  Now doing some work on the car (wife's Fabia Mk2 1.2 TSI) and decided to join.

Wife backed into a van (onto the van safe-T-bar) in a car park (van was OK) and dented the rear plastic bumper.  In an attempt to save a few bob, I'm trying to reshape the bumper myself.  Need to get the bumper off first... just before Xmas I managed to remove most of the Torx screws around the bumper.  There don't seem to be any guides about this (or that I've found... if there's one around, sorry... just let me know :) ).

The Torx screw on the near side at the top of the wheel arch was an absolute swine to get off.  Ended up with a Torx key rotating it about 1/8th at a time whilst bending the wheel liner back.  But managed to get it out.

The equivalent Torx screw on the driver's side (UK, right hand side) I'm going to tackle tomorrow.  It looks even worse.  I was only just about able to bend the wheel arch liner back enough to see the screw, let alone get a wrench or a key in there.  Am I missing something obvious here?  I have seen people describe removing the bumper as an hour long job but this has taken me a few hours so far (maybe I'm just slow :wondering:).  I've removed 3 Torx screws on the rear end of the driver's side wheel arch but can't see what else I'd need to do to pull the wheel arch out of the way...

Any ideas???  Help would be appreciated... hoping I can sort this myself rather than have to take it to the pros...

Thanks in advance

Ian

Ok thanks AwaoffSki. Going to give it another go this morning.

Managed to get the bumper off. Think I was being too delicate with the wheel lining before - jammed it out of the way and got the last screw out.

Thought I’d upload some photos in case it helps someone else...

removing the screws around the wheel arch liner. Ratchet/socket for these.

removing the screws inside the top of the wheel arch liner. Ratchet didn’t fit. Torx key did the job. Got enough room by being a bit brutal with the wheel arch lining... turns out it’s hard to damage so being rough with it is alright.

There are supposed to be 2 or 3 screws or plastic rivets underneath the bumper to take out. These were missing for some reason on our car.

Pull the light clusters out by turning the big plastic bolts inside the boot.

Undo the two large torx screws that normally sit behind the light clusters on both sides.

pull out bumper from one side then the other.

done. If you have parking sensors I think you need to disconnect them at this point.

refitting is reverse of course.

think that’s it... first time doing this, may have missed some things if so lemme know

I was repairing a dent so poured hot water over the bumper and pushed the dent out.

Time for a late lunch... missus owes me one :D

I know this is an old thread but I came across it looking for tips on removing the rear bumper as I'm considering doing it myself. In my search I found a video that might be handy for others looking to do the same so I thought I'd chuck it in incase it helps anybody. Video makes it look deceptively easy, might just give me the confidence to take it on myself. Link below.
