New Wheeler Dealers - life without Ed and Ant!

I've just watched the new Wheeler Dealers and was pleasantly surprised. Much as I loved Ed, I do like Ant Anstead, especially as he is easy on the eye :)

One other thing that caught my eye though, was that Ant doesn't wear gloves while working on the car. He looks like he knows what he is doing, but his hand were awfully clean. I never met a mechanic who didn't have very dirty nails and broken skin on their hands, at least if they work without wearing gloves.

Anyhoo, although the show isn't quite as full of Ed's 'top tips' as it was, it was still informative and enjoyably. I really liked the Ford designer who drew such a beautiful picture freehand. :)

I thought Ed was the brains behind Wheeler Dealers in the first place.

If so I guess he’ll pop up somewhere else..........or he’ll go into producing perhaps.

I know Ed stated he had creative differences with the way the new show was going to be shot (I think he worried that the spannering was to be dumbed down) but even though that was perhaps slightly true,  Ant still got the lions share of screen time, just the same as Ed did. Perhaps it's just his personal integrity that caused him to leave. I really miss the clever big gonk :(

The selling then the buy back of the car has to be suspect, why didn't they just let on they wanted the car off him to work on for the show then hand back.

I thought it was really watchable. I enjoyed Ed's skill and innovation, however Ant (not bothered if he's photogenic) also seemed to know the oily bits, as shown by his shocking gloveless fingers, refurbing the turbo just as Ed would. Mike was kept to a minimum.  I watch it for the cars. The rebuy made sense, the parts and labour and. Improved condition and value made sense. Not sure about the mods. 'Wot a triple wing spoiler and white rims!! ' Your Disgusted RS Owners Club    As for formulaic, that's the way of the world. If you choose not to watch it out of loyalty to Ed, you can always watch one if the many formulaic buy/strip/sell car programmes on Discovery.

I still can't see how a proper mechanic would have clean nails if he or she didn't wear gloves? I have seen Ant on that show where they auction mega expensive exotica and he is very watchable in that too :)

I dont mind the new guy,i first saw him in the other car programme with that bloke of the tv (cant remember his name now) they restored various cars then sent them to auction,i dont get the buy a car then do it up then "sell" it back to the original owner...but its only a tv show,i was surprised by the lack of gloves,as a mechanic of 25 years ive been wearing gloves for the last 20 years now as we were told about the link to used oils & cancer so started wearing them & to be fair its so much better wearing gloves than having to spend ages cleaning all the muck from under your nails etc every time you want to go out.  i did like the fact he explained about the turbo & showed it getting taken to bits etc rather than just showing him remove it then refit a new one,i enjoyed the new series so far.

I didnt like that 3rd wing, fully understand why they did it but it looked too daft to me,(i know the escort rs cosworth isnt exactly a pretty car to start with)i liked the replacement wheels but i thought they looked better in silver than white.

I have to agree re the white wheels. Had a set of 5 spokes on a white Subaru Legacy Turbo back in the early 90’s and it looked very nice......but it was ‘rally’ inspired I suppose....

As for Ant.....I think he is very good. I like (admire) Ed too as he has a similar background (product/industrial design) and is so full of knowledge based on ‘doing’ rather than from a book. It’s Mike Brewer that I can’t stand......don’t know why, he just grates (manner, voice.....I don’t know, he just annoys)

  • 3 weeks later...

After watching the 3rd episode of WD I've decided, Ant is too cheesy and comes over as a big macho man mechanic, I'm sure the females love him.

The programme is that watered down now, the reason I believe Edd upped and left it's making me feel the same. For the first time I've started FF (I record it) all the guff especially near the end when they go for there shakedown ride and get to the buyer they have found, or pretend to have found.

Goblin works garage......That Escort crash, well if that wasn't staged, hmm?

That show while I like to see a bit of totty what does she actually do. Don't get me wrong I don't mind females weilding the spanners but all I've ever see her do (last episode) is undo one bolt, lift a radiator out of a car and do one spot weld, all whilst keeping clean as if she's just got dressed to go out. And those rings on her fingers, I'll stop now before I get accused of anti female, BTW the blokes don't get dirty either. The motorbike guy he very convienently (again) has a bike to build, so can they get this car build together without him, stay tuned and find out, end of drama, cut to the ad break.

That Tim bloke on car SOS I could slap until my hand hurts, the blagging stuff I fast forward, purposely record so I don't have to suffer him too much.

The best shows currently, Iron Resurrection and Bitchin' Rides or the renamed show Kindig Customs on Discovery channel. All American cars but they do proper custom jobs and don't pretend to have time limits like car SOS do, like complete rebuilds in 4 weeks, yeah right.

Trouble is with most of these shows are the time constraints, 1 hour is never enough, watered down more like 40 mins air time to show all that they do.

Last week i watched a whole programme where a Super Car got a pinstripe / wide stripe done badly.

& another where a Range Rover thing got a Gold Wrap and bigger wheels for some Celebrity thing from Newcastle....

(Geordie Shore, was she from Newcastle?)

Just for your punishment!
