Not sure which one to get - diesel is about £1000 more expensive, that's quite a lot of fuel

Out of curiosity, and I know this doesn't answer your question, why do you need either of the more powerful engines anyway (assuming you're on about the 190TDI, as all the diesels are 2.0 litre)?

 

I test drove the 2.0TSI and whilst there is obviously a little more poke than the 1.4TSI (which I also tested), it really didn't seem worth paying for. It's not a sports car, and the 1.4TSI is perfectly adequate. Personally, I'd steer clear of diesel these days, even for the amount of mileage you're doing. However, if you're going to be towing something, then TDI possibly makes more sense, and if it's something big then maybe the 190 engine. The other drawback is that you can't get 2WD versions of the powerful engines, and 4x4 isn't a necessity for most people, even if they think it is - it just adds weight and reduces mpg for very little benefit.

 

All my personal opinion, of course.

I've only driven the 2.0 150TDI. It's incredibly comfortable and I'm averaging low 40's mpg after about 9000 miles.

Personally I chose the diesel purely on how the engine delivers power. Cost was not part of the equation for me. For me the TDI is better suited to the vehicle for my type and style of driving, real world quick and punchy, in gear acceleration. The torque makes a big difference. I appreciate everyone's circumstances are different however, I live in the sticks and have fast A roads and motorways where the grunt helps every day driving. Quite different if you are a city dweller (with diesels being unfavourable with unknown tax onsequences) or don't need to haul a family of 5 around most of the time. My 190PS diesel with 2000 on the clock is returning on average 45MPG on a mixed run now. Last trip at the weekend saw a 240 mile round trip to Birmingham returning 49.5, Not bad for a fully loaded Kodiaq in my view. Getting late thirties to low 40's around my local town with short trips and stopping. Would imagine the 150PS might improve on that a little. Obviously driving style plays a part too.

I’m amazed at anyone getting almost 50mpg.

 

I track every mile and every drop of diesel and in 6,500 mile my true average is probably in the mid to upper 30s (I’m not in front of my PC right now). 

 

I have found a drop off in the cold winter weather. A regular 72 mile round trip in August showed 44.8 on the App, but today the same trip only managed 37.7 mpg.

 

My longest day was 279 miles, solo with some fun along the way, and the App reports 39.8 mpg.

 

The silly “Long term” App data for 99.59 hours and 3,270 miles reads 39.2mpg.

 

In the real world, a tootle on A roads at smooth A road speeds can easily give over 40 mpg.

 

Consumption plummets at “Motorway Speeds” - it’s a big bus.

 

Not doing high miles means consumption is the least of my worries.

The grunt from the bigger diesel is what wins for me.

Yet another typo

5.5k miles in the 2.0TSi 4x4 DSG is returning me about 31mpg - about what I expected.

 

Motorway speeds are the killer, if you drive at 55-60mph you get a lot better mpg.
