Does anyone know if a usb hub will work to allow connection to apple CarPlay and power a secondary device?? I am wanting to use a WiFi dongle but because the 12v supplies are permanent live, I want to use usb to power it...

A similar question was asked a long time ago so I tried it. It won’t work.

An unpowered hub will only support, recognise and power one connected device, so it’s pretty pointless using an unpowered hub as it behaves solely as a single-device pass-through.

I’m not aware of any 12v powered USB hubs and I doubt the USB in the car would recognise more than one attached device and in any event you’d need to wire such a hub into an ignition switched 12v source to achieve what you want.

Ah well, thanks anyway :)

Would anyone know if there are unused USB's at the back of the headunit or elsewhere that could be tapped?

I would think it possible to fit a 'power on at ignition' usb port maybe in the arm rest compartment but I don't know how you would get a data connection.?

I use 12 volt step up transformer from Belkin in the rear cig lighter socket, it provides a mains power socket (for a Surface tablet) and two powered usb's leaving the front usb free.
