Karoq, first drive

Featured Replies

I am trying to convince my wife that the new Karoq is the car for her.

Picked the car up today with 7 miles on the clock and have only driven 37 miles so far (it is a 2.0 TDI 4X4 SE L).

In a previous thread some have asked how I am able to have one as their garage will not let them until after the release date.

The reason the dealer, Capitol Skoda, Newport, South Wales is letting me have it is because I am a good customer with a real interest in getting the wife's next car from them and I have had excellent service from them over the last near six years. Dealer quote. Feel free to mention names, spec etc. There’s no embargo. Your a Customer with a real interest in the brand, that’s a good thing. I’m sure you’ll be impressed, I was when I drove it in Spain. I’ll try the 1.6 tomorrow night myself.

One thing I would say is: -

VERY IMPRESSED.

I am not comparing engines (she will most likely have a small petrol engine) just ride at this point on a mixture of dual carriageways and B roads so far. The ride was very controlled and comfortable, even allowing for the B roads. I am comparing it (ride) to the Mokka, Ateca, Arona and Qashqai (which is the wife's shortlist) and the Kodiaq, latest Superb and Octavia, all of which I have driven and had for at least 24hours in this quest!

The dash digital! only kidding (not digital) is also as impressive in the quality and layout. The poise of the car and lean angle around bends also surprised me as I have been used to my near 6 year old car. The car was as poised as the Seat range which in my opinion tends to be much sharper in general than the Skoda range and was much better than my wife's other selections.

Quite like the part leather Alcantara trim as well. Pairing my phone in was a doddle and I am getting use to the ACC system.

If others would like my thoughts then I will post more.

If my wife wants a different car then it is her choice and all the dealers who have lent me cars over the last two months have been aware of this..

Enough for now.

Looking at manual that came with the car, the 2.0/140kw engine has no stats apart from transmission that is a DSG 4X4 the rest is blank as not available at print. The other engines are as noted 1.0, 1.5 TSI, 1.6, 2.0 TDI’s.

Hi I'm new to the forum and soon order my first Skoda.

We are going to view the Karoq next week with the intention of purching one for my wife.

At the moment we are looking at the 1.5 petrol SEL DSG, trading in her Nissan juke.

Her brother is a sales manager at a Skoda dealership so we'e experienced various Skodas but never owned one.

The Karoq looks ideal from what I've read and videos ive watched online and your feedback backs this up so I'm looking forward to seeing one in the flesh.

Cheers

Since you mentioned, I always wonder what makes people buy the juke? I can't even describe enoyght what I think of it.

Quite simple, she liked it so i bought her one, not quite my cup of tea but her car so her choice.

I know where you're coming from but you have to admit they seem to be very popular judging by the quantities seen daily on the roads.

I see. Well, your tolerance bar is much higher than mine (the things we do for the loved ones)

Popular? Yes, but I can only imagine it's due to price (£15k+) and higher seating position.

You are heading in the right path now

My wife liked the Juke until I pointed out its short comings compared to the other cars on her list. As I said before it is going to be her choice even if I do not like it but I am trying hard for the Karoq.

Well I have driven the car a further70 odd miles today some of them with the wife as a passenger. She is driving it tomorrow. I asked what she thinks of the inside and it is very favourable, she especially liked how relatively quiet it is (my thoughts as well) as our conversation volume reflected that. The soft touch materials and the height of the seating also got the thumbs up. Wait for tomorrow and her view on the drive . I am hoping that the rear camera and all-round sensors are a big help in overcoming its size relative to the other cars she has tried and I still have not told her it is bigger than the other cars.

Had a sub-contractor who was admiring it today, he too wondered how I got hold of one. He also gave it some very favourable comments, especially the rear seat space. Mind you he does have a XE Jag as his company car.:D

My enthusiasm must have spilled over as the wife ask if I wanted the Karoq now.:D

Sounds like a winner to me.

I'll let you know how i get on next Friday.

  • 2 weeks later...

Test drove Karoq SE Tech 1.5 manual yesterday, admittedly for less than an hour  but first impressions decide if you take any further action.

First very big difference, 7 speed manual against  1.2 DSG Yeti SE.

I was expecting better performance but it was disappointing, even allowing for my slower gear changes and a "tight" new engine it seemed "restricted" in comparision.

Seating was lower even on highest setting, steering was over powered and suspension was a lot softer, resulting in oversteer and a lot of correcting.

Nothing I probably wouldn't get used to in time, but at my age, that's a diminishing resource! :crying:

Conclusion; too different to persuade me to swap from my Yeti. Also couldn't find a colour option that suited my wife and myself.

I know it's smaller all round but now going to look at the Seat Arona range (whose prices INCLUDE metallic paint!).

g6zru - please let us know how you get on with the Arona.

It must have been some test drive to cause oversteer, can't Imagine there are many karoq test drives involving a bit of opposite lock :-)

Bidgestone Dueller on a Karoq are just terrible in my experience of road testing one on a cold road.

Even allowing for them being new / green.  I want straight to check the tyre pressures and let them down 15psi.

The dealerships that allow demonstrators out with over inflated tyres should be ashamed.

Too many do that.   Salespeople totally disinterested.

Will do. Probably later this week.

All things in life are comparative and I was comparing it to the Yeti.  My opposite lock days were over long ago.
