Could summarise the coil pack problem please ?

Featured Replies

Read a few posts on this, and heard stories from friends with other VAG cars....

Could someone summarise the coil pack issue(s) for me please ? I'm about to pick up my 53 plate Octavia vRS, and want to know what it's all about. In particular:

1) How likely is it that a 53 plate (Sep 2003) car would be affected ?

2) In the event of a failure, will Skoda UK fund the required remedial work ?

3) What sort of warranty do these parts have ?

4) Anything else I need to know ?

Thanks,

Si

1) How likely is it that a 53 plate (Sep 2003) car would be affected ?

Not very likely as any of the initial faulty batch would/should have been replaced FOC when it was serviced and under warranty.

2) In the event of a failure, will Skoda UK fund the required remedial work ?

They used to replace them FOC (see above) but it is now done on a case-by-case basis as they assume they've replaced all faulty items by now.

3) What sort of warranty do these parts have ?

The new ones have a 5yr warranty

4) Anything else I need to know ?

A faulty coil pack causes a misfire and often puts the vehicle into "limp mode". Failures are not actually THAT common but as with everything, you only hear about problems :P

Thanks Goochie, that's reassuring stuff.

I read somewhere else that there was a big VAG recall concerning the packs in early 2003 - is that correct ? So anything built after that date probably used the revised parts ?

What's all the "J", "K" and "L" part number stuff about then ?

Cheers, and thanks for your patience too !

Si

The letter is the suffix on the part number. There's a good picture in a thread posted only a few days ago.

Edit: here's the post with the pics.

A useful post indeed, thanks Nick. Goochie's obviously been-there-done-that ;)
