VW Touran from the OctyIII brains, does the popular 1.4TSI carry over?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Firstly I'm not getting rid of the Octy III. The next car needs to replace an 8 year old Kia Rio 1.5CRDI (decent old diesel engine with not DPF etc.)  an the OH is keen on the Touran as we'll have 2 kids (she's obsessed with keeping them rear facing as long as possible) and we'll have parents/our siblings to shift occasionally and don't want to take two cars out. The Kodiak seems a little small inside/pricey for what we want.

I'm thinking of avoiding the Diesel options (although the same 2.0TDI 150ps engine from the OctyIII is in it i believe, just with AddBlu) and going for the ever popular on this forum, the 1.4TSI.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this power plant, in a car that's heavier/bulkier than the octavia. I wondered if the 1.5TSI would make its way into the range, but I've not heard any rumor of it.

I accept that comments including 'giving up', 'box on wheels' and 'Yeti forum' are to be expected. . .

Cheers!

Unless the rear facing seats are absolutely essential how about a Golf SV? They are a bit bland inside but have plenty of room. My Dad has an SE 1.4 DSG, gets about 55mpgon a decent journey and says it’s the best car he has ever owned and he has had plenty!

Another Octy out of the question?

Will have a look at the SV ta.

Another octy isn't out of the question, but the 7 seats are the selling point...

Kodiaq isn’t small inside (it’s almost a Superb on stilts), but yes it is pricey if you want seven chairs.

Can't advice for diesel vs petrol (as I have myself still doubts of the choise made) BUT strongly recommend to avoid new VAG engines (1.5TSI in this case). Proven to be fragile for the first iterrations..almost all new ones..

From everything I've read you're not loosing out on 1.5tsi. On paper it should be the better but design appears to have concentrated on emissions rather than performance and economy.  The best bet would be to find a car that's about to change to the 1.5 i.e. manufacturer looking to get shot of their 1.4tsi

Petrol -v- diesel - there's enough comment on that already.

Are you looking new or used? If new then check on delivery times as there may be a delay - seems like VW can't produce petrol 1.4 / 1.5 engines quick enough. 1.4 only available on higher trim levels.

Price is a complicated matter and all boils down on how the individual wishes to fund the car. There's certainly no rights and wrongs. I guess if buying cash via a broker then price difference between cheapest 7 seat 1.4 Touran and 1.4 kodiaq is around £2000. However if you are funding on PCP, I wouldn't be surprised to see the prices level out as I'd expect the Kodiaq has higher residuals.

The 1.4TSI (and almost identical 1.5TSI) engines are extremely refined, economical and offer decent perfromance. I was given an Octy 1.4 as a courtesy car during the last service of my VRS TSI. To be honnest, it felt more refined than the 2.0TSI, returned over 40mpg during the day I had it (vs 28mpg average for the VRS), plus I didn't really miss any performance during normal driving. It won't quite match diesel economy, but it will be nicer to live with. The Touran is only a hundred kilos heavier than an Octavia, so same rules should apply.

Also consider a Karoq if 7-seats are not really needed. It will be cheaper to buy and hold it's value better than a Touran.

7 seats are a requirement.

Usually do cash and looking new - and the brokers (carFile) comes out £2-3k cheaper for the VW, even with the options . . . better kit on the VW too.  No choice for 1.5tsi at the mo on the touran for the 1.4tsi would be the engine of choice. Is a while to wait, but had to wait for the Octy so. . .

So decided to go for the 1.4 in the Touran SEL + a few options, primarily for the wife to drive as she tortures the Octavia (not getting it up to temp on her drive to work).

Ordered via CarFile as the local dealers wanted a few hundred more, and my current car for free! Will get at least £1500 for the Rio, but could see it privately in the meantime (similar on the market for around £3500).
