Spare wheel

Featured Replies

So what's the difference between the spacesaver wheel option and the temporary wheel option?  The temp looks bigger on the picture in the builder but it's obviously not a full sized wheel as it's a temp.  Anyone know.

I was torn between going without or getting a spare for that one time when you don't want to be stuck somewhere for 2 hours waiting for a tow.

Now I'm torn between getting just the spacesaver or getting it with the Canton!  It's like a carrot on a string!

No idea, I've just ordered a car with a traditional space saver wheel though.

I saw few types today:-

  1. Inflator kit - Boot carpet base sits directly on the metal of the boot floor (Inflator kit is in the shallow wheel well)
  2. Spacesaver - Boot carpet base sits on top of polystyrene floor spacer that has gaps for jack etc thus raising the floor by a bit
  3. Steel wheel + Canton - Boot carpet base sits on top of polystyrene spacer that has gaps for jack etc thus raising the floor by a few inches. It also has the Canton sub-woofer mounted inside the space saver and lots of round holes in the polystrene spacer presumably to let the sound out - this also raises the floor by a few inches thus reducing the boot space accordingly

Didn't see a bigger temporary wheel but as there is only a very shallow wheel well - presumably there is a bigger polystyrene floor spacer before the boot carpet base reducing the space even more

Thanks for the info. Can you please tell if more boot space is robbed my having the Canton Sound System on a 4x4 because I think the 4x4s have less boot depth to start with than the two wheel drive models. I wouldn't want to lose anymore!

You have three spare wheel options:-

1 - Steel space saving spare wheel with tool kit and jack. 125/70 R18. Available in combination with 4x2 and 4x4. [a skinny thing, speed restricted]  = £150

2 - Temporary steel space saver spare wheel with tool kit and jack. 215/60 R16. Only in combination with 4x2. [a proper wheel, but also speed restricted as it is not the same size as others on the car, confusing as it will have the same diameter along with suitable speed and load rating] = £150

3 - Full size spare wheel. Only in combination with 4x2. [only available on the SE and I am guessing exactly as others on the car so no speed restriction] = £250

I tow a small van and would choose option 2.

I saw a Canton subwoofer and it was mounted in a steel wheel that raises the floor by quite a few inches.

Is the boot floor different between the 4x4 and the fwd? I suppose the rear suspension is different so it could be (fwd has torsion beam axle whereas the 4x4 has independant)

I'm slightly confused re spacesaver as the steel wheel looks the same but is deeper.  I thought I had seen a spacesaver in one car but I'm not convinced now.

If you run the configurator (which I have a few times now!) the spacesaver shows the polysterene inside the wheel but not on the floor however when you look at the car with just the inflator etc the wheel well is rather shallow. Back to the dealer to double check.

Even though smaller than the Superb's boot it's just about OK for us with the inflator but now I'm not sure re spacesaver. I took our suitcases / plastic boxes to compare and contrast and the depth is lacking but the height somewhat compensates

Anyone out there with a spacesaver fitted and a photo?

Ah  - useful thanks. Two of the cars I saw were 4x4 one had a Canton subwoofer both had a steel wheel of some sort - now checking the configurator this must be the space saver steel wheel. On the ones I saw there was a reasonably substantial polystryene spacer (with jack etc...). The one with the Canton had holes in it (to let sound out?)

Slightly dissapointed as it looks like I'll need the inflator kit to keep enough boot space for us.

I had a response from my dealer yesterday about the wheel and they told me that the spacesaver was the better option for the Edition.  So that's what I've ordered. Going to lose a little boot floor depth but I'd rather have the peace of mind.

Regarding the inflator kit, is stored in a bag. Located in the R/H boot storage space, the wheel well is completely filled with a foam insert.

Not in the 1.5 2wd SE L I drove. It was mounted centrally in a wheel well foam/polysterene insert.  Tried our luggage out in this car so was testing all sorts of combinations.
