Canton differences in sound quality noticed by anyone?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I noticed in my VRS FL TDI that the quality of sound differs significantly with respect to means used to transmit music from my phone. The best quality I get is the one when phone is connected via bluetooth. Android auto is also not bad but noticeably worse than bluetooth. The worst sound quality is the one I get when using mirrorlink as connection option. Car has Canton sound system and the phone is Samsung S8. Could this be due to cable used to connect or something else?

What is it about the sound that is worse? Bluetooth sounds louder than SD card, I guess as the source is pre-amped and additional equalisation may take place compared to a "flat" source.

I'm not convinced the sound quality is better though via Bluetooth. SD sounds crisper with less distortion when turned up.

I don't have mirrorlink to compare.

I am not talking about SD card but about music from mobile phone streamed either through btooth or USB data cable. It is not just that it is louder but frequencies are much clearer over bluetooth which makes me wonder why. Mirror link in itself is disaster. Music from same apps over same cable sounds half as clear and loud as the one played using same hardware through android auto. I am pretty convinced that it has something to do with either cable or maybe standards used by android auto and mirror link.

It’s fairly well known the sound in the mk3 infotainment system is heavily affected by the source.

i normally stream from iPhone via a cable or Bluetooth, but cd or my old (classic) iPod definitely have noticeable improvement in quality on the canton in my vrs at least.

In my car I know that I can turn the volume up independently on my iPhone 6 if connected via Bluetooth (can make it too loud or too quiet). If connected by cable this is not the case.

I've noticed that as well - the best source that I have found for music is my classic iPod plugged in via USB - just sounds more rounded to me.

You can use FLAC straight from SD card.

Of course the quality of the source will affect final result, Canton can't do much about it. Actually, the better sound system you have on the output, better input is needed too.

I confirm that BT stream isn't really on the level I like. I prefer FLAC/MP3 instead.

My Music Collection is Flac, so I have 32GB of music on an SD, I also have a good selection on my iPod Classic and it just sounds better to my ears - that was only a quick test session to see if it would work. When I get some more time I will try a back to back session.
