5w-30 fully synthetic comline engine oil

Featured Replies

Hi, I have just serviced my octavia 2.0 TDI with the 5w-30 fully synthetic comline engine oil.

On comline's website, it says that the oil will last 30,000 miles (on diesel engines)

Does anyone know if this is correct? Its a long life engine oil but doesnt 30,000 miles sound like a bit too much?

How long do you reckon it'll last?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I doubt anyone would let engine oil go that far, even if it could! Surely you will be changing it out more regularly than that anyway?

If it says it meets vw spec 507 then it meets the requirements of skoda variable service regime dependent on the on board oil monitoring and service indicator being set to variable interval,  but only if your car/engine supports it.

Read up about variable interval service intervals. The computer will decide when the next oil change is due which could be anything from 9000 miles/1 year to 18600 miles/2 year max dependent on your usage and oil condition as measured by a built in sensor.

To go beyond 10k/1 year between oil changes is generally thought to be unwise.

If you cant find spec 507 listed on the tin then the above does not apply and it cant be used as longlife.

If it only says 505 then its the wrong oil for your car, get it changed straight away.

If it says 505.01 then its suitable but only for 10k/1 yr max.

It does say 507 on the tin.....

Yeah I would change the oil long before 30,000 miles but I was just wondering if it can really last that long

Try it and see.

Thing is how long does the engine last after the oil is changed at 30,000  miles,

maybe long enough,

but how many miles a year do you do?

On cars i own i do not want the Oil filter in more than 10,000 miles even with good oil.

& there are plenty good oils around.

With a lease car it can stay in there 20,000 miles because that is what the owner thinks is acceptable.

I do about 11k miles a year..... I usually change the oil every year on the MOT date

Sorted then, what is the worst that can happen?

If a major oil manufacturer claims their oil would last 30,000 miles then I'm pretty sure that they've the test results to prove it .... Would I run my car that long without changing it no I wouldn't...... Extended oil changes where introduced to attract fleet buyers into looking at and hopefully buying your cars or vehicles ....

If you've a large fleet of cars all doing say 30-50,000 miles a year and change the oil every 10,000 miles that's a lot of money and a lot of down time ... You double that to 20,000 miles and you've slashed your costs overnight and as your getting rid of the car at 2 years old even if it's going to be bad for the engine in the long run you're not the one picking up the bill for it.

I guess it depends what the definition of "last to" is.  You'd be want to carry out used oil analysis at 15k miles to see what is happening.

Also, a lot of the diesels with long change intervals run a very large sump capacity

I think 30k miles is way too much. Also, on cars with a long-life interval, the specifications are 'up to 30.000km' and not '30.000km' as a fixed value. Car should indicate an earlier service depending on your driving.

Personally, I haven't read much about oil for 30k miles. VAG long-life indicates 30.000km (not miles). I won't go beyond that. Actually, I'll replace my oil every 20-25k (max). Costs of oil filter and replacement oil isn't very huge. Damage of an engine part (Especially the turbo) is much more....

When driving only 11k (miles I assume) a year.. would cause you to change oil/filter every 4 years..  No way I would recommend anyone that.

Bought an oil pump myself, so I can extract old oil myself. Oil filter is <10 GBP or so. I usually buy my oil in multiple 5L cans to save on shipping costs and have some in stock. 1 liter bottle is in my car, which I fill using the big cans. Oil swap, including filter, is done in less than 30min and costs me approx 40 GBP. Cant risky my engine for that.

If I had 1000 cars running, an earlier interval would cost me a serious amount of money (especially when it's done at a shop), but for me private car... it's not worth the few bucks of saving imho.

For now, this is working out fine for me, still don't have any issues, and still running original engine, including turbo, only small repairs, none of them are related to wear due to lack of (or dirty) oil. My car (1.9 PD) is still running smoothly.. and just passed the 375k (km) mark

For the price of oil (I use Quantum Longlife III 507.00), I change the oil and filter every 5000 miles. Keeps things nice and clean.
