Alternator out of alignment

Featured Replies

:thumbdwn: heres a good one for you a friend did the timing belt on our octavia Tdi 110 02 plate on the 13th feb. last friday a wiered noise started on the car a metalic ringing with a flapping noise on investigation it was found the alternator was out of alignment to the rest of the pulleys and the multi v belt had part shreded and was flailing arround could have been norty if got to where it shouldent the question being does the alternator have to be removed when doing the timing belt and if not has anyone had this happen to them we have cut 2 teeth off the belt to align it back up ok it works fine now or can there be another reason for the aternator going out of alignment cheers Dave

If I understand correctly you're now running with a timing belt around 80% of its original width? I hope it's only a temporary arrangement. I would recommend getting it redone asap.

ncarring ! please read it again ! 2 teeth of the alternator belt not the timing belt

Something isnt right, it sounds like a pulley hasnt been put back on right.

Cutting the belt isnt a good idea, and you let this person do your timimg belt? Madness.

:D turns out the free wheeling pully had colapsed on the alternator and it came off altogether but up and running fine now with a 25,000 mile secondhand one on:)
