windscreen washer tank losing water faster than i can fill it

Featured Replies

just bought my first Skoda Sunday past, full service history with only 62,000 on the clock,it's a great wee car to drive but had what i thought were 3 minor niggles, one of the niggles was my screen washer motor was working but no water was getting to the washers, turns out getting to the windscreen washer tank or replacing it,isn't that minor

so if i take the left wheelhouse liner off, will i be able to get a good enough look,to see where the leak is ?

the leaks that bad,the waters coming out as fast as i put it in,the waters pouring out just under the O/S front bumper

after reading a few threads on here,i found a detailed thread with pictures by Jonny5ive,on converting to a 5ltr bottle, which i have no intention of doing, but it showed me how much work i have ahead of me if i need to replace my washer tank,i'm praying the leaks coming from somewhere i can fix with just the wheelhouse liner removed,so i don't have to go through all that, just to replace a leaking tank

before i start the job,do any of you more experienced owners have any advice or tips ?

i can't believe how complicated the washer tank is to get to on a Fabia, with all my cars back in the day (i'm getting old),you just lifted the bonnet up,pulled the old washer tank off a bracket, then pushed a new one back in it's place, can't believe ive to take the front bumper off my Fabia,if my tank needs replacing

My 1979 Talbot Sunbeam had the washer tank under the wheel arch. It's really nothing new.

Remove the T25 Torx screws from the front of the N/S arch liner and see if the pipe/s have popped off the pump barbs (very common!). In this kind of weather, lack of correct washer fluid mix will cause the water to freeze and force the pipes off. There are also three other pipe connections leading to the rear washer which can come apart - one at the bulkhead and two inside the car. I doubt the actual tank will be damaged unless it's frozen solid and cracked or something.

Usual leaks in this area are:

1/ Grommet has perished

2/ Pipe has come adrift

3/ Pump valve has failed

4/ Bottle has split

1,2 and 3 are easy cheap fixes. You can get a pump from Amazon for around £18. Make sure it is a Febi or better. Cheaper ones are really rubbish and hardly pump any fluid. It's worth getting a new grommet from a dealers before you start taking things apart. They are only a couple of quid and you might as well replace it if you are fiddling with the pump. Just make sure you dont do as I did and push the grommet into the bottle when fitting the pump! You'll have to remove the bottle completely or get another grommet and leave that one floating around inside.

4 is a more expensive and time consuming fix. Don't bother trying to get a bottle from online scrappies. I found that a new one was only £10 more.

Yup. When I was looking the Scrappy wanted £15 plus £10 postage. Wasn't worth it so for £35 got brand new one with free delivery.
