2.0TSI 162kW - what makes this noise?

Featured Replies

Hi, your help would be appreciated. I'm going to buy early 2014 Skoda Octavia RS with 69000 on the clock. What bothers me is this strange sound from engine when accelerating. Engine has to be cold and it starts every time at 2500rpm. As soon as oil meets 50-60 C engine is ok.

I dont think this is  the west-gate-clip think.

Do you know this sound from your car?

Thank you.

Just to clarify, is that the faint (in the video) "juddering" sound you can hear over the engine?

And if so, is it a vibration / resonating in line with engine revs?

Hi, it is the sound which starts in 3rd second of the movie. Yes, somethink like vibration and no, not with revs. Sound is still the same.

I watched toady sound comes also earlier around 2000revs and depends more on gas pedal position. The colder engine the noisier sound.

Is it the turbo spooling up? Either way, you should not get into the boost before the oil has warmed up past 90c, just saying...

Probably turbo is making this noise.

Turbo is charging engine even if is cold and you are gently on gas - as in my case.

I think you did not get me - you should not accelerate a turbo'ed car like that before the oil is at the right temperature.

It is one of the causes for turbo failure.

IMHO, that sounds normal for a cold engine, although I do NOT slam on the gas like that on a low car.

The revs don't much matter - actually, low revs, like you mention, in 3rd gear, are worse, since the turbo will spool hard to add boost.

Tl;Dr: don't accelerate hard (regardless of RPM) before the oil temp reaches 90°C

Looking for noises before that is pointless, since the car is still warming up.

In my own experience, the gearbox takes even longer to warm up.

90C is a bit overkill, but drive it very gently until oil temperature starts to rise. Above 75C is already okay for any engine component sake to drive however you like.

Hi I agree with you - not be hard on gas whe engine is cold - but don't know why mentioned in this thread.

With the car I asked - service said looks like piston failure. So for me it is clear...I will not buy it.

Thank you.
