Sorry - I can't see an edit button...

What I said here isn't quite right. So the lights work with the doors as they should, which is the main thing. The lights work in the 'on' position too, which is great. The 'off' position doesn't work though, so if the doors are open, the lights can't be turned off. They do still time out though after a few minutes, so it's no big deal.

  • Come on guys! Pin switches have not been used in VW group cars for ages.   Do the courtesy lights work when the engine is running? My Mk2 had a time limiting switch on these to prevent the b

  • Mine have LED front and rear already for that reason, so recommend anyone swapping out the dingy yellow bulbs if possible. The amount of heat the normal bulbs produce is insane.

  • Yeah, this button is used to disable the car's internal alarm sensors.  You should press it (it will illuminate) if you are leaving the car locked with people/animals inside it.  Note that you need to

That's what I meant. You just explained it better. And with photos too. Good job JeremyS.

I just thought I'd add my experience with this problem. As others have described, the interior lights started to become intermittent, and eventually failing altogether in the 'door open' position. They always worked in the 'on' position. I noticed that pressing the switch lightly would make them come on with the door open. Which is no use in the dark when you can't see the switch! And sure enough, the switch was corroded and/or burnt, and was never going to make a good circuit.

So, inspired by L9ppy's post:

I found myself a short length of wire, and soldered to the pins as described, and as these photos. Works perfectly now! And it still works in the off and on positions too, contrary to what L9ppy says. Maybe I've used a different pin?

I've just followed your guide, soldering the same two pins. The switches now work, but with the switch in the middle position the lights stay on after the engine is on. Does that happen in your car too?

No. Works normally in middle position. Put up a photo. There's only two ways can solder link from centre point. Have you tried link to the other point. Also make sure you solder link to the rusty side of switch.

After looking closer at your photos, it looks like you put some solder inside the switch mechanism. Is that what you mean? I didn't do that, just soldered the wire across the two pins.

I'll get the light switch out again and post a photo.

taken me a while to get back to sorting out the light switch. I've attached a photo of the circuit and switch from my car, and I've circled in red the two pins I soldered. You can see the switch and pins are very corroded. If you can let me know if I've done something wrong, that would be great.

I've also found a replacement secondhand part on ebay which i could get.

In the end I bought a secondhand ceiling light switch. Lights are all working properly again now.

For reference, here's a photo of the pins I soldered. Something definitely wasn't right as the lights had some residual power when the switch was in the off position and stayed on while the engine was running.

Now I've uploaded the photo, I can see why it didn't work. I'd soldered the wrong pins! 🤦‍♂️
