Help! I cant access relays under the dash!?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am trying to access the relays located in/under the dash by the drivers pedals.  I have managed to find 3 x torx screws (2 on the underside of the dash and 1 behind the fuse access panel) but the damn thing just wont come off.

Am I missing a screw somewhere?  I have looked and looked and cannot see anymore.  I have even taken out the drop-down storage unit built in to that part of the dash, but this doesnt seem to have helped either.

I am worried that if I keep pulling and yanking I am going to snap something as it just feels too firmly attached.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Two more ;)

The little trim pieces either side of the steering wheel pull off. One will have the light switch in which needs removing first.

I was wondering whether those might pop off but I was a bit concerned about damaging them.  Does the light switch just pull off as well?  What is the best way to remove this trim?  Just lever it off with something plastic?

So

The trims should just pop off, either fingers or a plastic pry tool should be fine.

For the light switch, you need to:

- move it to off

- push the switch in

- while pushing in, turn it clockwise, it should get about half way to the sidelights

- pull it out

Might take a couple of attempts to start with but something like this:

That's really helpful, thank you very much for that.  I will give it a go over the weekend!

Thanks again

Strangely enough I was trying to get the lower dash trim off today as well. But failed for the exact same reason. I removed my stereo today to try and get at the lense to clean it and found what looked like 5 miles of wiring due to a previous owner fitting a Nokia hands free kit. Some wires went into a box fitted behind that lower dash trim. I managed to take some skin off my knuckles getting it out!! Great info.

Hi again,

Just wanted to say thanks, this worked like a charm and replacing the relay looks to have fixed my hear window demister problem.

One issue though, I was able to remove the headlight switch easy as pie, however when I put it back I think I got the angle slightly wrong and it's jammed.  I have managed to push it so it is flush but I can't get it back out.

While I still have the dash apart and can access the rear of the headlight switch, does anyone have any tips to help me remove it so that I can reinsert it correctly?

Worse comes to worse I will just leave it, but if I ever have another relay go it could be problematic.

Thanks

Ok, after some constant fiddling and some minor damage to the headlight switch surround I managed to get it out again.

Note for anyone else who gets the switch stuck and is trying to push it from the back, make sure you push right in the very centre of the rear of the switch.  Most of what I was actually trying to push was the housing built into the dash. Doh!
