Mk1 vrs knocking and play in steering

Featured Replies

Hi all, looking for advice. My good old vrs has developed a worrying issue. When I turn mainly right I get a knocking noise from the front wheels. However there's also a horrible shake in the steering wheel and some play in the steering. This happens as well at about 50 to 6 0 mph.....? Any ideas?

Unfortunately it could be a great many things.

When you say play in the steering, if you try and get someone to move the steering wheel a small amount (say an 1/8th of  a steering wheel rotation either side of centre) do the roadwheels move visibly or does one move less than the other?.

It could be wishbone bushes, movement in a track rod end or inner rack joint, worn ball joints, or maybe something as simple as a wheel not tightened correctly.

The knock may be roll bar links or bushes or any of the above really. To help you more, we need to know a bit more. Have you had the car jacked up to check for any movement in the wheel at all?.

Hope it helps

Phil.
