The roads around these parts are shockingly bad, and my Suberb Elegance 170 low profile tyres are just not up to the job. I spend a lot of driving time weaving around trying to avoid the damned holes, waiting for that awful BANG every time I hit one. So can I easily swap these huge wheels and ultra thin tyres for something with a bit more give, and less susceptible to the pitted farm tracks that Oxfordshire County Council call 'roads? All advice and suggestions welcomed.

People say 17" best compromise for looks and comfort. The ultimate comfort is indeed from 16" wheels. All these were available in some form on the Superb 2.  You won't have problems finding wheels hopefully. Tyres's perhaps cheaper the smaller you go. 

Insurance disclosure needs a to be reviewed cost wise in case it makes it too prohibitive for you.

Fuel flap have label with approved sizes.

I currently have 17" wheels on the front with winter tyres. When I swapped them in place of the 18" standards back in November I did notice that the jarring from Surrey's moonscape roads was not as harsh. The extra 1/2" of sidewall does soften things a bit.
