FL LED headlight AFS question

Featured Replies

I'm considering a new vRS but can't work out what the adapive headlights do - I have them with the existing one with Xenons and understand the different beam patterns (descibed in the latest brochure) but also love the turning feature, very useful on country roads. WHat I cannot find out is if this is still part of the AFS on the LE fitted latest vRS. Anyne able to help, please?

Yes, LED with AFS standard on the SE-L, L&K and vRS. Good, but the cornering movement is not as fluid as the xenon lights from my experience of 2 days with an fl SE-L, even with the lights set to Sport.

It has AFS but it's not quite the same as the Xenons in the pre-facelift. As I understand it the projector physically turns with the Xenons, but the LED one doesn't. The cornering light etc. is provided by an additional separate LED.

Cheers, ahenners you are right the projector in the Xenon lights does actually turn.

My LEDs seem like they're fixed. Very very bright but not much 'adaptive-ness'.

There is a small light cluster on the inside of each unit that lights up sideways from the car.

Its only really for cornering rather than actual tilt whilst driving.

If you've got existing AFS Xenon lights, you'll be sorely disappointed. When I first started driving my FL O3, I thought the AFS system was broken. Looking at the VCDS info for the different driving types, Highway, Town, etc, the run time shows that the AFS is adapting to the surroundings, but so subtly, you really couldn't notice.

Ditto, when I leave work there's a 90 degree bend and during the winter they seem to sweep smoothly illuminating the turn.

Living in rural Somerset the cornering Xenons will be the thing I will miss most when we get the new Octy. I really don't need to see the bank, what I want to see is where the road goes as I twist and turn.

I find the lighting provided by the LED Lights better than any Xenon HiDs that I have every experienced. You may loose the AFS function but the light produced is fantastic IMHO.

+1

I agree the light output from LED is 1000 time better than the xenon's I had on my Mk2, but yeah the do not have the same cornering function.

You can see them adjusting depending on the road, below 30mph they light the kerbs on the n/s more and then above 30 they extend further forward.

Cornering wise the fog lights come on at low speed but do not seem to have much effect at high speed.
