'Resonance' when on bite out of gear.

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. As some of you may know, I have been working through all of the different squeaks, knocks, rattles and clonks in my Mk1 Fabia estate over the last few months.

It seems I now have a new one. I have had a replacement gearbox, DMF, clutch kit and even upgraded gearbox oil, but I now have a vibration/Resonance in the 'cabin' if I lift the clutch pedal to the bite, when out of gear. The bite is very good, no slippage in any gears and the car stalls when trying to pull away in 3rd etc.

There is no noise when driving normally.

The noise may have been there since it was all fitted, but I might not have heard it, due to all the other noises!

It seems different to a failed thrust bearing, as the original one was going and that sang for England when the clutch was 'off'

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like the input shaft bearing. They often do make some noise.

Is it like this?...

Thanks again, Lee. Sorry to be a pain. Just wanted to double check.

The video you linked to is how the old thrust bearing sounded and operated. - IE grumbing with the clutch up, silent with clutch up. The noise grumbing only happens on the bite (or passing through it quickly) . Above and below that its fine.

I wonder if all the noises being so noticeable is due to poor soundproofing. I did check about my underbonnet sound proofing, and it turns out that I do have the better 'mat' as such. Would it be worth buying additional matting to place under the original?

I'll try and get a sound recording of the noise.

Don't think another bonnet mat would make much difference. It would also make your bonnet heavier. Would be interested to hear your recording of the noise.

Well I suppose you could but not sure it would help with the gearbox noise you describe.

I recently soundproofed the back of my Fabia too. Rear floor, under back seats, boot floor and wheel arches. Also stuffed the rear wheel arch cavities with dacron. Has made a big reduction in rear road noise.

Good find. You're a great ebay raider! Do you think that soundproofing would fit under the factory-fitted mat?

Just how did you manage to soundproof your wheel arches?  As I have a drone from the low-profile tyres I would like to eliminate...... Could I use carpet underlay? (Which might be cheaper......)

If you think that the soundproofing will go under the bonnet pad, I'll give it a try. Is there a knack to getting the pad off? I ripped mine when I was looking at what version I had (I'll blame you - you're a bad influence!)

Haha :D

I've never taken mine off so I don't know. It didn't have one originally so I fitted one but all you do is push the clips on. Don't know what it's like trying to get them back off again!

I wasn't aware that there were different bonnet pad versions. Could you explain a bit more about that?

I don't know if you remember, but we had a chat along the same lines as this one in another thread.......

Yes but there's nothing about different factory bonnet pad versions, which is what I thought you meant.

Sorry for the double post, but I've been doing some research on the resonance/vibration and some other owners of the mk1 have said it can be due to a vibrating air filter box/assembly or engine cover (mine has some foam missing off the back.....)  Has anyone else had these problems, and how did you cure it?

Here's an audio file of the vibration/resonance. I hope you can just about make it out!

Record_0008.wav

Can't really hear much on that tbh.
