Cam belt change.

Featured Replies

Hi,  I have recently purchased a mk1 Octavia VRS with 81k on the clock. It had a cam belt change at 57k but 5 years ago. Should I be looking to change the cam belt again even though it is only 24k since the last change?

I would say yes, as they do specify either a mileage or age change point. So at 5 years old, it will be due next year anyway.

Do it ASAP. If that will be any other engine then fine! But 1.8 20V are very "demanding" and I've seen many cases when cambelt just snapped. ..

Definitely get it done for peace of mind. If the belt goes, you're in for a whole load of grief. Consider having the water pump renewed as well. My local independent VAG garage is about £300 all-in for belt kit, water pump, coolant and labour.

And get a metal impeller water pump, not the plastic ones.. less breakage risk.

Thanks mate. I’ll definitely do that.
