Kerosene Spillage - Help!

Featured Replies

Morning all,

This wally managed to spill 12.5 litres of heating oil in the boot of my Octavia... idiot I know!

Any advice on what to use to get rid of the god aweful stink is much appreciated.

The boot carpet and wooden boot floor support is already removed from the car and at the moment has just had a good powerwash, currently on the washing line drying out.

The inside of the car still stinks though, and i cant quite find where its coming from.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

A strong detergent, elbow grease and good rinse is about all you can do.

Being a heavy fuel it will take time to evaporate and the smell to dissipate after getting into fabrics etc.

Just takes time.

There are compounds available for soaking up kerosene spills, and also biological liquids which can neutralise the odour and convert the spillage into a safe compound for easier removal. They're not absolutely effective but they're a help.

If it was me I would be looking at buying second hand carpets and stripping the old ones out and binning them. You could then, hopefully, remove all traces of the oil and smell from the painted metal easier than trying to clean the carpets.

You’ll probably find that 12.5 litres of kerosene won’t have been confined to just the boot. Lift up the rear bench seat and check under there tooincluding the carpets into the rear foot wells . Cat litter is effective at soaking up spillages. The vapours that are causing the smell will take longer to go but as suggested above a strong detergent and elbow grease will help.
