Non starter mystery scout mk2

Featured Replies

Bit of an oddity- scout 1.9tdi. All dash lights and relays perfect on stage 2 but  starter does not turn on stage 3. AA came, could not get diagnostics to read (asssume they use VAGCOM). Left on stage 2 ignition, flashed starter but engine does not start so fuel is not pumping or injectors are switched off also. So it is not stage 3 of the ignition switch, battery or starter. I spoke to a guy that rebuilt a dashpod previously for me, he said if it was immob the engine would turn OK and poss start for a short period. However there is part of me that thought there used to be a yellow key light when I first turned the ignition on but not sure whether that was previous golf or Octavia to be honest. All relays seem to click on stage 2. I tried to get a mobile electrician out to a rural location but he is not as mobile as he made out so currently it is stuck fast.

Whatever it is prevents both the starter circuitry and either the fuel pump or injectors from operating. There will be no bad suggestions here, if anyone knows of a mobile car diagnostics in the Glastonbury area that would be even better, any replies gratefully received. RM

In case it helps anyone with these symptoms, it was the earth wire between ECU and main power relay that had broken. Diagnostics guy said it had been seen before but most commonly it is a corroded fuse box which causes similar non starting problems. Closed now. RM

Glad you got sorted, electrical fault finding on modern cars can be a nightmare.

By the way, if your Octavia is a Scout it'll be a 2.0, the 1.9 engine wasn't used in the Scout, only the regular 4x4.
