Turbo issue 2005 vrs

Featured Replies

Hi my sons 2005 vrs has been diagnosed with a broken turbo buy a friend of his who is into his cars and seems to know what he is talking about but was just after some advice so I could double check this before we pay out for a new turbo..

He was driving the car when he lost all power and smoke came from under the bonnet he pulled over straight away and lifted the bonnet the smoke was coming from the air intake and a siren type noise from the engine I was kinda led to believe that if the turbo went you would have loads of smoke coming out of the exhaust?.

Could anyone give any advice please

Thanks

Yep, the turbo has gone pop, the siren noise is a dead giveaway. Your sons friend is correct.

Ok if thanks for prompt reply so my next bit of advice I am after is it something that can be stripped and rebuilt or is it a new turbo I need to souce.

Thanks

You can strip it and fit a new CHRA if you have sufficient experience, appropriate tooling and somewhere clean and well-lit to do it.

@Tyfabiavrs - Smoke is variable. If the oil seals go you get a white James Bond smokescreen until you run our of engine oil (about a mile). If the turbo's gone and not boosting, you'll get loss of power and black smoke.

Hi kenoneill.

It had no smoke at all from exhaust just white smoke from the air intake is that normal to happen on these cars.

Thanks

@Tyfabiavrs - You're the one who said "diagnosed with a broken turbo": IME a broken turbo always produces exhaust smoke and loss of power.

Why don't you just whip off the TIP and take a look, it'll be incredibly obvious that the impeller is toast.
