Manual. The whole car should be run in engine, brakes and even tyres for at least 500 miles then gradually increase rpm and more heavier braking if need be. Though really you should let the car slow itself. Just come off the gas earlier. It will pay dividends

I shall remember this then, was told when I last got a brand new car that the modern cars don’t need running in. My one will be a DSG and never owned an auto before.

So just got to try and keep rpm down without hard breaking?

Yes just drive gently at first. There are a few lines in the handbook as well. By the way look at the oil. Unbelievably thin.

Do engines still need running in any more? I got told they don’t?

Last car I bought with specific running in instructions regarding what revs to use was a 1980 Ford Escort. Since then its simply been to avoid labouring the engine, avoid maximum revs avoid full throttle and vary your revs for the first few hundred miles. Its worked well enough for me for the past 34 years and 6 of the cars have been VAG ones.

Whatever you do don't baby a new engine. If you do there is a risk of glazing the bores and the only way to cure the lack of power and high fuel/oil consumption is a rebuild which is not a warranty item.

Basically drive normally from day one.

'Running in' - search the long description of running in TSI engines on here but basically don't welly it over 2500rpm until the oil is warm (more than 80°c) then keep it under 2/3rds max revs (about 4500rpm) for the first 500 miles.  You need to move up and down the revs, use acceleration and overun to change the forces on the engine. Once past 500 miles then work up to using the full rev range.

This is covered in the manual for my Suberb TSi, not sure if it is in the Karoq.
