MPG & 6th Gear....

Featured Replies

A recent trip down the M5 for me in a 1.6 estate gave me 69.6 mpg indicated.

That was cruise control at 70mph, aircon set to auto, and occasionally putting my foot down to assist with passing vehicles when required before letting the speed drop to 70 again.

Edit: It's a manual... Forgot to mention!

Not had a good run in our 1.0TSi yet, but I find myself forgetting to change up the gears because the engine is so quiet! We've only done 230 miles so far & are averaging around 38mpg, but that is almost exclusively very short runs (2-3 miles) in town. Got a couple of motorway trips coming up next weekend so I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get out of it.

On a linked note, is it better for the mpg to use the cruise control to get you up to speed, or to get there manually & then set it?

In my experience you won't be getting realistic figures for about 4k Kms mabey 5,so call it 3k miles.

Mine has settled out around 6.1l/100km long-term on the display which I find absolutely spot on accurate btw.

Somewhere around 46mpg that's arsing about in my local b roads big hills raw learner driver piloting most of the time and me driving without and particular economy in mind.

If I do care to make an effort c.2.5k ISH gearchanges etc etc 5.0l/100km is easily attainable, that's on those same roads.

Gearchanges nanny is too premature for other than relatively flat roads however given the little itty bitty teeny tiny (but super impressive ) little lawnmower engine.

First decent spin,a 5/600 km motorway juant coming up tomorrow should be interesting.

I do get the impression that 130k plus cruise hurts economy a lot (see itty bitty.........).

Cruise control I have always found to be generally more economical, but let's be honest who doesn't use it rather than getting ankle ache when sitting on the motorway/dual carriageway so the point is moot in my eyes.

Ok I've just relented and done actual sums

6.1l/100k is 46.3mpg

5.0l/100 is 56.5mpg

Plan for tomorrow is cruise control and a nice legal 120kph the whole way .

Consumption reports from @brettikivi in Finland with his 1.0tsi Octavia seem to indicate he betters consumption of my 1.4tsi at higher speeds (>100kph) but the disparity is less and slightly swings in the 1.4tsi favour as speeds slow. At a constant (true) 110kph on the flat I'll get 5.7L/100 (49mpg), but any compromise of that speed (road works, town speed limits etc) means that the average speed reduces and consumption improves. Typically 95kph average speed will return 5.0L/100 (56mpg)

Be interesting to see what @181ce reports back from his higher speed trip.

@J_D 1.6D diesel return is pretty awesome. :)

the 100 / 120 difference wasn't that marked when I tried it last, but we're another 5-6k kms on now, so let's see what happens when the limits shift. No trip up north this weekend, so no reports back on 80km/h stuff.

I think the best I've seen on a run is just over 4l/100, with 4.5 eminently doable in light traffic. That's around 62 mpg or so. At 120 I'd expect the Maxidot to show not far short of 6l/100 when the engine's still so young :)

So 253km,230km motorway,33 dual carriageway/city.

118km cruise control, exactly 2.5k rpm.

5.5l/100km or 51.3 mpg.

Will try 110 kph on the return just for comparison.

Do you have a manual or DSG box?

The reason I ask is that the relationship between the speed and rpm is not quite right for the gearing, but the disparity is less with the slightly higher auto gearing.

Easily accounted for if you are just going by the speedo display rather than true (GPS?) speed.

It is not unusual these days for a speedo to be 4-9% optimistic (10% or more is illegal). My Octavia 1.4tsi manual for instance displays 118kph at a true 110kph with 2500 rpm showing. The odometer and consumption displays on mine are pretty accurate though.

Web sources indicate that the 1.0tsi manual top gear is about 1% longer (~25rpm variance) than the 1.4tsi despite having lower torque.

Relating back to the original OP thread title, according to the gear/speed/consumption profile I have for my car the difference between 5th and 6th gear at a true 110kph is about 0.5L/100 or 5mpg.

Manual,118k indicated, shall check GPS on return journey.

Return trip,109kph indicated at 2250rpm

Same route

5.1l/109km or 55.1mpg

Pretty darn impressed with the lawnmower to be fair
