Fuel consumption 184 DSG

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Currently debating whether to jack in the scout (MY16) because it’s fuel consumption is so poor.

I am unladen most of the time (maybe 100kg load avergae) but driving gently, usually about the speed limit, I’m having to work hard to get 40. Even on a long gentle motorway run 44 is max.

What is is anyone else’s experience?

I do have light bars on the roof, but low profile ones.

ECO mode generally makes it worse because it just drops the engine braking.

For reference at 35,000 miles and still on half worn original brake pads.

doesn't seem that bad. On a FWD 184 vrs I get around 47mpg and I do mainly motorway miles. The DSG does seem to reduce the MPG slightly

Yes, doesn't seem so bad for an auto box and 4wd.

But ... do you really need 4wd in Norfolk?

Not a Scout, but a 4x4 vRS DSG - long term average on display is 37mpg.

Lots of shorter journeys though, plus a DTUK box and pedal box.

Mostly driven gently by SWMBO, not so gentle when I drive - longer runs easily see late 40's if just cruising on A roads at 60ish.

Not usually heavily laden either.

Having lived in Norfolk for many years while working there, including a very snowy Winter, I reckon you do - when every road from your house to anywhere is either sheet ice or snow then 4wd is a must in my book.

I would agree it doesn’t seem so bad. As a proper average for me on the tanks I’m not just cruising up and down fast A roads I would put 44 MPG as about the same as my 2WD vRS 184 DSG :)

When I had a 2WD VRS 184 DSG on a 64 plate averaged 45mpg over 7,000miles only owned it for 7 months found the DSG box very annoying and diesel too noisy. Bought a new 16 plate Superb 1.4Tsi manual and averaged 50mpg over 16,000miles in 16 months.

Maybe try running a while without the bars on the roof. Once over 40 or 50mph they may be creating a noticeable drag.

When I've had low MPG for a while I've normally found I've a brake binding enough to make the wheel hot to touch after a run out.

Are the tyre pressures what they should be? Of course different tyres have significantly different rolling resistance hence different mpgs.

My 64 DSG Scout is always getting over 40 and over 50 on a 600 mile motorway (mostly) journey which was steady but mostly at the limit (actual not indicated). Still on C-Sportcontacts. Mostly steady driving but having to drop into S-mode from time to time to release some Beta-endorpins - the feel good buzz.

Scout 184 DSG I'm getting 42mpg calculated over ~33k miles.

Computer over-reports by ~10%

I usually use ECO or Sport, but I actively micromanage coasting vs engine engaged when in Eco.

Combined Skoda figure of Karoq 1.5Tsi manual SEL under 52mpg, just managed this in ECO on commute to work.

I get around 48-52 mpg DSG vRS on my way to and from work, roughly 50klm round trip , have her in normal mode, did try eco (letting her roll down hills etc ) but the difference was maybe an extra 2 mpg , also once a week i have her in sports to help with DPF regen.

I was just reading the handbook..... as one does of an evening, and read this on page 136:

"At a speed of 100-120 km/h, a vehicle fitted with a roof rack cross member without a load will use about 10 % more fuel than normal due to the increased aerodynamic drag."
