DSG Service Advice

Featured Replies

It's been a while since I posted on here but I'm hoping that the Briskodians will be able to provide some advice/guidance.

I recently part ex'd my Fabia vRS SE in for a 65 plate Octavia vRS MKIII due to a bundle of joy arriving on Boxing Day to add to our 3 dogs.

The dealer I used wasn't a Skoda dealer but it had excellent independent reviews and the staff were knowledgeable and professional. Overall the whole interaction was enjoyable to be a part of.

As the car has a DSG Gearbox, and having done my research, one of the questions I asked was if the service on it had been done at 40k miles. They checked and confirmed it had. This was backed up on an invoice for the cars last service at 37k miles which was included with the car.

After driving it for a couple of weeks I noticed the oil needed topping up, so I contacted the Skoda dealership where it was last serviced to see which oil was used. During the call I was informed that at the last service the DSG service was only an advisory at 40k miles and I had misread the invoice, which I had.

My questions are these:

1. Is it possible to obtain the cars service history direct from Skoda and if so how?

2. What is the likely impact short and long term with the car doing 22 miles 5 days a week at motorway speeds?

Obviously if I am able to determine the DSG service wasn't completed at 40k miles I'll be putting it in for it immediately.

Any helpful advice would be appreciated as I'm now concerned for the longevity of my new car.

Ask Skoda UK CS what is on the System

http://skoda.co.uk/about-us/contact-us

But what is on the system is what the techs put on, or service desk they can print it out at a Main Dealerships.

Warranty requires Serviced as Manufacturers Schedule / Spec.  Advisory my ar53.

FULL MAIN DEALER SERVICE HISTORY, does not mean that Brake Fluid is changed, DSG Fluid, Haldex Serviced unless

there is Invoices showing that was paid for. Even then you trust on peoples honesty.

Service Plans seldom include that stuff, at 3 or 4 years.

40,000 mile Service on your DSG.   £179 at Participating Dealers. 3-10 years and all that stuff. same price actually not 3 year old or more,

they are chancers.

Audi saying  @ 38,000 miles.   Just because called a S-tronic.  Same gearboxes.

?

What brought you to knowing it needed the oil topping up, was the DSG playing up?

Thanks for you prompt reply.

I'll check with Skoda tomorrow to see if I can get clarity.

Nothing prompted it, just did it as part of regular checks on the car. It seems to drive fine, no noticeable problems but it is my first proper experience of a DSG.

Is the additional 5k miles going to have caused damage without the service?

I was planning on getting an extended warranty from Skoda at its first MOT so will they not provide one if the DSG service hasn't been done at 40k or if I put in for it at 45k?

Like you say, trust on people's honesty.

I doubt the extra 5k miles will have damaged the ‘box, especially as it seems to be running well and you are doing mainly motorway miles.

For the the sake of about £200, just get it done ASAP.

Once done, I can’t see Skoda turning down your £££ for an extended warranty!

If going OK, then relax, just get it done.

As to taking out a Skoda Warranty,

Skoda would have a Bl00dy cheek if there was ever a claim making anything of being 5,000 miles over,

as the Warranty T&C's are about Service Guidelines,

& Skoda UK know well that Skoda Approved Used Cars are not serviced to Manufactures Service Schedules / Spec often but have a 12 month warranty.

That can be Ex Management, Fleet / VW Finance owned vehicles, that have not had Brake Fluid changed at 3 years, DSG services at 40,000 miles

& Haldex @ 3 years.   Seldom the 'Recommended A/C service that the up-sellers point out, but Service Plans do not include.'

Not all. There are ex privately owned cars in the approved used car network that are fully serviced.

You just have to do your homework and makesure you check the V5 and service history.

Sorry said that wrong.  Skoda know well that there can be Skoda Approved Used cars not serviced to manufacturer Service schedules / specs.

Nothing to do with where the vehicle came from, but ones that VW Finance are owners of can be exactly what i am meaning.

Obviously there are private cars. Serviced or not serviced.  Not reset to Factory Settings even if the Steering Assist / Brake Assist or XDS has been reset. maybe to Disability settings.

Privately owned are as likely to be among those that might not have had Brake Fluid Changed, DSG Fluid, Haldex Serviced, because the owner never was told they needed or there was a Service Plan,

Same with Ex Motability, the biggest buyer group in the UK.

That is the Point.  FMDSH does not mean all Servicing carried out per schedule.

?

Check a V5 gives a Registered Keeper.

Mrs Brown might own a Taxi Company, Driving School, or a Pizza Delivery company, or be the Finance Director of a Dealership.

Check the Service Record with show Minor / Major / Minor, and the OP checked and was told the DSG oil change was done.

No invoice no proof,. even an invoice and still does not prove it was done.

Surely you know about Dealers and Salespeople and 'service books lost;  and Not on the System. or on the System and not carried out.

It's never been easier to check though

Name and address of former keeper can usually give good results with a google or social media search.

The former keeper of our latest Octavia was a doctor from Sheffield. The milage meant only two services had been done but got two full itemised print out outs.

Sat nav history and Facebook search also confirmed he liked to visit his holiday home in the lakes.

And searching his private plate confirmed he'd bought another Octavia, same model, same colour.

There are plenty of avenues to research the cars history and the dealers should be able to supply a full service record.

If they can't or are unwilling to then walk away. There are plenty of other cars for sale.

It’s a lesson really, always clear the sat nav. The Amundsen unit I bought from eBay was not cleared and I had the previous owner of that cars name, home address, work address, his house phone number, his wife’s phone number etc etc I also have the reg of the vehicle the unit came from. Lots of info that I deleted straight away and have forgotten the specifics of. Others may not do that.

Regarding the DSG box, It’s £179 at Skoda but my dealer did it for £129 for me. My car has had its second box oil change and is now powering through 83k fault free. Mine does circa 150 miles a day, easy :)

logiclee,

Great advice.

The OP was mislead or lied to.   So too late, but every purchase is an experience, but internet advise after the fact is too late.

Thanks for all the helpful advice to those that posted it. I've managed to get the car booked in for £179 At my local Skoda garage.

I did however do some research on the previous owner, which backs up what the sales staff told me. Let's just say they have some very high profile (legal) connections and aren't short of money. Also seem to be a genuine car enthusiast which provides some reassurance that the gearbox was serviced as required.

Can't put a price on piece of mind though.
