How to look after my 2007 Octavia 1.9 tdi pd

Featured Replies

Just joined the group after picking up a 2007 1.9 tdi pd octavia ambient with 107000 miles on the clock. Paid £2300 for which seems ok having looked around. FSH and recent cam belt, pump etc changed. Having never had a diesel befor, other than regular service how else can i look after the engine? I have heard people say let it warm up before driving as well as letting it stand before turning off. Why is this and what else do you recommend?

Welcome to Briskoda.

The 1.9 tdi unit is a tough and well tested engine, sounds likes it’s had all the work needed done recently. I would always let the engine get up to temperature but you do not need to wait before you drive off.

Also in regards to letting it stand, it is only if say enthusiastic driving that you maybe let it stand for a minute but if you are just nipping to the shops then you can just switch off, point to make is when you switch off make sure not to give it a rev, just let it idle.

Thanks SkodaBoy thats very helpful feedback.

Hello Beeze and welcome to Briskoda,

Great engine, if a little rough/noisy at lower revs.  I've had its baby brother 3cyl 1.4PD tdi (Mk1 Fabia) and now same engine and same year as you, but in a Roomster.

Essential to use oil that's specifically formulated for these PD engines, I use Millers Oils (made nearby at Brighouse) and their diesel fuel additive, have done for 30yrs in 7 different diesel cars.  Check latest spec via Millers website; the last lot I had is as follows:-

Millers Fully Synthetic "Professional" Trident Long-life 5W40, meets VW spec 502.00, and 505.01, Millers product ref 6124 and quantity 5litres.

Some cars have been set up on a Variable servicing schedule, others (inc. mine) on fixed interval, so annual oil and filter service, mine's just past 89,000 miles.

Thanks Richard. I’ll take a look at the oil and addertives, hopefully i’ll be able to source them in Salford. I’d like to do an oil change soon if it hasn’t been done in the last 3 or 4 k miles. I’m also thinking of getting the gear box oil done as well as it seems a little gritty between gears. The other thing i’ve noticed is that the car starts perfectly from cold but when starting from warm i need to give it some gas. Any ideas what this might be or is it normal with a diesel? I obviously wait for the coil light to go out.
