Cracked windscreen fair enough, camera realignment erm ok, 4 wheel alignment - too far

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've had a windscreen replaced under my insurance, because the Kodiaq has lane assist, automatic lights/wiper speed and driver assistance (assume that's the warning when you get too close?) and that this work need to be carried out at a Skoda dealership.

The dealership who will do the recalibration is pushing for 4 wheel alignment which would be to my cost and not covered by insurance.

I've driven the car several hours and everything seems as if it's operating correctly.

I'm happy with a trip to a dealer for camera calibration but touching the wheels seems excessive.

Can anyone advise if this is really necessary, the car is 7 months old and this feels like a way to massage my wallet.

Thoughts please?

What happened to make the screen smash?  Was it an accident or cold weather etc?

If you were in an accident, then alignment may be wise.  Can't see any other case where it would be warranted.  Sounds like dealer trying to recoup cost of repair on the screen to me.

You can always get the alignment done elsewhere if the dealer wants your eyes out :)

Bit different, my Octavia 230 has had most of the front undercarriage replaced under warranty and needed the 4 wheel laser alignment fot the LA/HBA camera calibration

My local Skoda dealer sent my car to an Audi dealership for the work to be carried out. Wasn't cheap, around the £500 mark.

Just a simple stone cracking the windscreen, good perspective though.

Thank you both

Good luck, I'm still half way through this farce with my 2016 Octavia, its been ongoing for weeks.

It has only has the Lane Assist camera but I too was told the camera would need re-calibrating after the screen was replaced, no mention of a full four-wheel alignment though.

Your lucky in that your local dealer has the calibration rig, mine didn't, nor did the local Autoglass depot so I had to travel 60 miles to an Autoglass depot that had the right equipment.

After three hours of messing about they couldn't re-calibrate it, for some reason it wouldn't work, they reckon the Pilkington screen they fitted is faulty and that it needs another screen!

I have literally this afternoon been told by Autoglass that my request to have a genuine Skoda screen has been approved, it is now on order. I strongly recommend you push for the same.

In addition to the calibration issue, the rear view mirror vibrates so that you can't see through it when driving (the socket on the Pilkington screen is wrong / out of tolerance), the visible VIN is no longer visible, the window in the glass doesn't align with the VIN plate, the parking ticket holder is no longer touching the windscreen so that's now unusable and there is black glue visible all around the edge of the screen. My little finger fits in the gap down the drivers side, I can barely get my finger nail in the other side.

As for the wheel alignment, this sounds excessive to me, mine didn't need it, but as you say, despite that the Lane Assist seems to be working fine.

My local Skoda dealer told me that the calibration would cost £349, Autoglass charge £250.

These 'driver assistance' devices are auto calibrating. IOW they self calibrate. If you fit an OE product within tolerance (you'd have to be a special kind of idiot to get it wrong IAF) and the device(s) is/are not disconnected while the car is put through an ignition cycle, the car won't detect the screen has been changed.
