Does CarPlay / SmartLink mean no built in Sat Nav by default?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I’ve just purchased a 2016 Octavia 1.4 TSI SE Sport through an authorised Skoda dealer. I opted to pay for the CarPlay / SmartLink upgrade, I’ve now received the car and I can happily use Apple Maps through my iPhone& CarPlay. However, when I select the sat nav I get the message “Please insert a data medium with valid navigation data.”

Does upgrading to SmartLink mean I have to forego the built in car sat nav? I’m sure the car had sat nav when I had a test drive before the upgrade.

I won’t need it most of the time, but for those occasions when I can’t get mobile reception I would still want the original sat nav ability.

Thanks

Sounds like you have a MIB2 Amundsen - the message "Please insert a data medium with valid navigation data." means that the seller has removed the SD card with the map data - you should go back to them and request they return it to you.

Thanks for the answer, apologies for the delay in replying. Dealer is claiming it was never there in the first place! Which is ironic because when I first asked about SmartLink he claimed “it doesn’t have it because it already has satnav” clearly showing he had no idea then and has no idea now!

Still trying to get one from him, if not is there anything I need to consider if buying a replacement off eBay? (Part number/compatibility etc) I can see plenty of official Skoda & VW ones on there but don’t know if they’re tied to specific models.

Is satnav listed in the original description? Because if so then they need to give you a card- it's missrepresentation otherwise. And at any rate, don't new VAG cars come with 3 years map updates? They should be just handing you a new SD card...

Have you checked in the slot (in the unit in the glovebox) if there is a satnav card inserted?  It could be there but not being read correctly; if the dealer knicked it, it will be of little use to them without the car as the cards are locked to the car after insertion.  Having said which, see ebay - where cards are for sale that "work correctly in donor car" - so probably won't with a different car .. and may not support the Amundsen+ RNS3015 which I assume your car has (because my car is the same model and that's what it has)

Having nearly trashed my own SD card whilst "upgrading" the maps yesterday (it's a PAINFUL process) I started looking for a replacement - these guys have them for around £40 if the dealer continues to mess you about.  https://www.latestsatnav.co.uk/latest-2018-sat-nav-update-for-skoda-amundsen--rns315-v10-sd-card-navigation-map-434-p.asp.

Also check on http://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/en-gb to see what updates you are due, for free, for your particular car.  Sadly you can't download the files to any old sd card, it has to be a skoda one (I tried) - but if you have a card and it's just not working you may be able to "refresh" it using the update portal (prepare for a long boring wait tho).

Sadly you will discover that even the latest maps are not very up to date and that the VAG satnav system is not as good as TomTom or Googlemaps .. but it's nice that it's built in and irritating to buy something and not get it!

Much wrong information here I'm afraid.

If you have a glovebox mounted unit then you don't have an Amundsen + / RNS315 unit (or an Amundsen). Cards for these units will not work in the MIB / MIB2 Amundsen II unit which the 2016 Octavia is fitted with (the unit with the glovebox control unit). Cards for the Amundsen + / RNS315 are indeed locked to the original unit once used, but cards for the MIB units are not locked and can be simply transferred from one unit to another. If your unit is missing an sd card then buy one which is suitable and correct, download the latest maps and copy to the card, insert it in the unit, and away you go.

The cards in the link above are not for the MIB Amundsen, but are single use cards for the earlier Amundsen +. They're also cloned / pirated software which will probably not work anyway (unless someone has managed to re engineer the software to remove the bug which VAG seem to have left in for some reason) and will cause your Amundsen + to reboot randomly. Personally, I wouldn't, but then I wouldn't anyway because they're the wrong cards for the MIB Amundsen anyway.

However, as said the maps are available for free from the update portal (provided we've now got the correct Skoda sd card to load them on to). Bear in mind, a VW branded card will work just as well as a Skoda branded card, as long as it's the correct one for the unit and not an RNS315...

OK!  Thanks for the corrections.  I thought I'd cracked it.  Evidently not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what unit IS fitted to a 2017 Octavia SE-Sport?  (unit and two sd card slots inside the glovebox)?  Amundsen MIB2? How can we be sure?

The sat nav data can be got from the update portal ... IF you have a VAG sd card; but which SD cards will work with the unit?

The part number on my sd card is 5L0 051 236P  .... and there are some on ebay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Skoda-2016-Satellite-Navigation-Sat-Nav-SD-Card-Europe-5L0-051-236P/253429561966?hash=item3b01943a6e).  "Used" however, so how is that going to work, it will be locked to the previous users car (I've mailed the seller to ask him!)

Going to be extra careful with my SD-card from now on!

Many thanks for all of the replies. The SD slots are in the glovebox and empty.

I’ll continue to chase the dealer and have found the original web listing for the car which does also confirm it has sat nav, so that gives me a bit more leverage at least.

So if I understand correctly, I have an Amundsen MIB or MIB2 and not an RNS315 so need to look for this when buying a card? I’ll mainly be using Apple Maps so just want this as a back up option when I have no signal. And it’s something I should have by default anyway!

Is there anywhere in the menus I can get it to show the unit information?

Thanks again

If you want an SD card I have a spare and can probably be persuaded to sell you it. £30 posted should cover it.

If it's a unit fitted in the glove box and has sat nav then it's either a Columbus or an Amundsen (both units are either MIB1 or MIB2). Simply turn the system on, press and hold the Menu" button (bottom right on the display unit), it pops up a page where there's an option for "Software download/versions", select this and there'll be a part number on the third line. Part number will tell you exactly what unit you have if you can google it to find out.

Which sd cards will work? The right one for the unit is the answer. MIB1 used a smaller capacity sd card which isn't suitable for the MIB2 units, but the part number you quoted is correct for the MIB2 Amundsen, however there are many different part numbers based on when they were manufactured and what maps were delivered on them. The maps are unimportant as long as the card is correct, and you can update the maps from the online portal as you say.

Again, the cards are NOT locked to the original unit. They can be directly transferred from one unit to another compatible unit. Little point emailing the seller, the answer is right here, irrespective of what the seller might tell you.

Thanks Rustynuts.  Great info (some of which you told me the first time and I didn't properly read!).

The ebay seller (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Skoda-2016-Satellite-Navigation-Sat-Nav-SD-Card-Europe-5L0-051-236P/253429561966?hash=item3b01943a6e). also says the sd cards are NOT locked to the cars and that if you buy one from him, he'll accept a return if it doesn't work.  Probably why unscrupulous dealers whip them out before sale .. then put them on e-bay!?

The one in my mk3 se-sport estate is an Amundsen MIB2 (5Q0035874B).

I don't know if it's different in my 2015 Superb, but I just used a 32Gb card I had lying around to update my maps.  I have the original card, but it's too small for the current maps, it's 16Gb I think and the latest maps are 25Gb.  I actually used the micro SD card out of my phone and stuck it in an adapter.  So I don't think you need any special card, just format it to FAT and copy the maps onto it.

Like I say, it might be different on an Octavia, but I would think it's unlikely.

May be a different version of the sat nav?  They seem to be very numerous (Amundsen, Amundsen +, Amundsen II, Columbus etc etc) and different in their requirements.

I hope you are right, but I couldn't make it work.  It took me "several" attempts to get useable SatNav data on to ANY sd-card, the only one that worked was using the original 16GB card formatted to 32bit Fat, 4096 byte clusters and updated using Skoda's software.  I have two 32GB cards in front of me that I bought specifically for this, but have lost the will to go through it all again.

The SatNav maps are still out of date BTW, even the latest version (2018) shows the road to one of my client's factories open at both ends when it has been closed at one end for years.  Tom Tom and Google both have that correct.

I know from personal experience that on the MIB Amundsen you DO need a special Skoda (or VAG) SD card (which must remain in the SD card slot all the time as the maps are read directly from it), but AFAIK to update any other Skoda system you can use any SD card - but I stand to be corrected!
