Side Lights Always On With Ignition

Featured Replies

I've owned cars in the past where there was a fuse location that could enable the side lights to come on and off with the ignition (in the old days before DRLs were adopted). I think it's because it is mandatory in certain countries to have side lights (or dipped beam?) always on, maybe Scandinavian countries or something? A simple fuse in or out saved a lot of hassle for the dealers and owners in various countries. Anyways I'm just wondering whether the Fabia Mk1 has a fuse slot for this functionality? Thanks

The Fabia doesn’t have this option, regardless where it was sold.

“Coming home” lights can be installed, but requires making up the wires, sensor etc and installing.

My build thread has the details as I’ve installed such a device, but the bits and pieces were bought from Maplins and I have no idea where else they can be bought from.

Just re-read your post and misunderstood what you were asking! My bad.

Still don’t believe what you’re asking can be done.

The coming home lights will put on the headlights and rears when you unlock the car if it’s dark, if that is what you’re after?!

Cant see the point in the side lights coming on when the ignition is turned on as surely that’s what the light switch is for.... or am I missing something?!

Yeah not talking about coming home lights - thanks for your input though.

I've had a fuse option on a few vehicles before where side lights or dipped beam came on at ignition (like old volvos) but cant remember what maybe old Vauxhalls or VAG cars from the 90s era.

I'm guessing its because side lights or dipped beam always on is or was a mandatory requirement for certain EU countries before DRLs were adopted.

Yeah could be done by the switch but then you have to remember to turn it on and off manually and risk wearing it out prematurely due to excessive use, there defo was a fuse option on certain cars where with a fuse in the lights would come on and off with the ignition and with the fuse out the lights would only work manually via the switch.

@SkodaFabiaOwner - You don't state your location, not even to nation, but that sounds like functionality that was only ever required in Scandinavia.

Have you ever considered trying using your judgement as to whether or not lights are even necessary?

As there are products such as the USDM light kit out there that allow the indicators to be ran at 50% brightness with the ignition on (and off) at the flick of a switch, I’d hazard a guess it could be adapted to run side lights instead or perhaps you can DIY wire a relay to the side lights to energise when the ignition comes on. Maybe it’s possible to bypass the switch for the sidelights entirely and connect it to an ignition live instead.

There’s a handful of ways to do this I

imagine.

I did this on both my Fabia's - Sidelights ON when ignition on - I also had 2 front LED DRL's but as they were too bright at night, I incorporated 2 relays to switch them when the headlamps were switched on.
