High mileage FSH vs Low mileage no service history?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've seen a 2008 Superb that I've kinda fallen in love with. Its got 200+k miles on it, however, its got full dealer service history and 1 previous owner.  The guy's asking price is £2900.

So, what would you advise me to do? buy a lower mileage Superb at around £4k+ or buy this or a similar high mileage Superb for cheaper?

In addition, does anybody have a buying guide for us ignorant first-time Superb buyers.

Many thanks

Which engine? DSG or manual? 4x4?

Hi

it's 1.9 TDI PD SE manual gear box.

thanks

Just to be sure - is it a Superb Mark 1 or a Mark 2 (2008 was a model changeover year)?

I would think that one of the questions would be whether the car has a DPF or not? I read here that some of the Mark 2 Superbs got 1.9 PD engines without DPF's (BXE engine code being the last?).  If the car does have a DPF then at 200K miles, it might not be long for this world and its a pricey replacement, if you go that route. 20K miles a year is good for a diesel if it got motorway runs for some of it. do you know anything about how it was used?

To chime in, we have a MK5 Golf 1.9 PD (no dpf but guessing its the same engine? ) with 208k miles on it and it still feel so so strong. Apart from a turbo going under warranty at 50k it has been utterly fault free and still fills me with faith that it has another 100k more miles left in it. Its the bodywork that looks rough now.

Beware the BXE engine:-

High mileage with FSH every time for me...'bangernomics' at it's best.

With FSH (with all print outs or quotes of the work done - this is the important bit...) you know mechanically that it's all up and together and what has been done/replaced.

Just check the body/chassis as arguably if there are issues here that can be a costly issue.

What is the mileage of the one without FSH ?

And what is the spec of both ?

Personally - I wouldn't touch a car above 50k miles ;)

The lower mileage one is 120k with only the log book and 1 key.  and the higher mileage one is 201k.

The car is actually in very good nick.  In fact I would give the interior 9.5/10 rating.  The 0.5 being taken off because the driver's seat has a few marks on the leather. It looks like nobody has ever sat on the rear seats. Nor does it look like the boot has ever been used.

The FSH is all from Skoda and the cambelt was changed by Skoda at 168k.  Its got 8 months MOT with advisories relating to the tyres.  The alloys are also good.

I've used my negotiation skills and have reduced it to £2500 with "not a penny less."

So, should I go ahead?

That's a shame. I would add that I only buy used petrol engined cars. Never owned a new car (although wife bought a new 1.0 ltr Dacia Stepway thing which is a great little car and loaded for around £100/month on leasing including 5 year warranty and car insurance).  I don't know how they do it....anyway....

My Skoda 3.6 was 92,000 chf new in 2010 (£67,000 :o ) fully loaded with everything on the options list plus it had the Embrach upgrades from new in that price. I paid £16k used in 2014 and bizarrely, here in Swiss, the 3.6 estate has kept it's value still which amazes me for a big petrol engined car (although they are garnering a bit of a cult following here in 3.6 form it seems).

Used diesels seem to be more costly to service (than petrol) and even the supposedly bullet proof Merc/Audi/BMW diesels have injection/glow plug issues at 150,00kms. Easily remedied, but a real costly PITA (plus with the clamp down on diesel, especially old ones, emission control at MFK time - Swiss MOT basically - are difficult to pass. Is it happening in the UK too?)

I have just purchased a 1996 Mercedes 2.0 petrol 190e with one owner from new, garaged all it's life and full Merc history. 319,000 kms done on motorway between Lausanne and Zurich - runs like a clock and absolutely like new bodywork (no rust at all) and even the interior is spot on. Every printout from new....I can see everything that has been done. Almost £20k in 1986...£750 :)

My 2007 Saab 97x (5.3 Chevy Hemi SUV thing - basically a Chevy Trailblazer tarted up) has 180,000kms on it and is just run in. One owner from new, same supplying dealer full history and again, body is pristine... over £32k new... £2200 B)

There are fantastic bargains out there providing you check the history and try to talk with the owner. Makes a big difference from my experience.

Apologies for the lengthy reply, but I'm intrigued by the used car market - I do totally accept that a used high mileage, car is not everyones cup of tea though

PS. YES, I'D GO AHEAD :thumbup:
