Which engine

Featured Replies

It seems to be hard to buy a car from skoda.

I am in the process of deciding on my next company car. I had decided on a superb 1.4, however it appears that skoda no longer wants to sell petrol superbs and my order was cancelled when it got to dealer level.

So I am now looking at an octavia. The main reason I initially chose the superb was for its enormous boot.  (I carry a lot of gear for my job and have to carry a wheelchair occasionally as well).

So here I am asking which is the better engine for the octavia, the 1.4 or the 1.5 either one will be with the DSG box and the trim level will be SEL  with bits added to bring it to technology level of toys. TIA

I just opted for the Octavia 1.5 TSI DSG SE L, should receive my car in another 3 weeks. I too wanted to go for the Superb but unfortunately the length of the car wouldn't fit to well in my driveway and hence decided to go for the Octi. I'd recommend going for the 1.5 TSI in lieu of the 1.4 TSI.

Here's a write up on the changes in the 1.5 TSI

Both great engines IMHO had the 1.4Tsi in Superb HATCH in 2016 and could easily top 50mpg whilst being a serene motorway cruiser. Now got the 1.5Tsi in wife's Karoq SEL and just as comfy and quiet as the Superb and just as quick both cars being similar kerbweights. Karoq averaging 43.5mpg due to it's SUV shape but very pleased with it after 3 months and 2,600 miles. Octavia hatch has 590 litre boot, estate 610 litres and should easily top 50mpg as when cruising the ACT ensures fuel is only going to 2 cylinders above 1400rpm assuming you are not going uphill. Hope my experience of both helps your decision. Good Skoda Motoring!

Swapped my 1.6 tdi for the 1.5 tsi in SEL spec with dsg. Great car and love the dsg. It's more than quick enough and is very smooth and quiet.

So far covered 2,700 mls and my only slight issue is the fuel consumption. I has remained at just under 40mpg. I had thought it would have been better by now.

In fairness it's not had many long runs lately and those it has had have been rather brisk on good A roads.

The delays are because Skoda are switching petrols over to particulate filter versions for emissions reg reasons. The same issue will crop up with Octavias.

Existing petrol Superbs and Octavias may still be available from stock in the dealer network. Bear in mind that the Octavia is less sophisticated on the suspension front than the Superb - at the back, it has a torsion beam where the Superb has a fully independent set up and rides noticeably better as a result. The Superb is more refined generally, with sound deadening which the Octy doesn’t have.

The Octy is still a decent car and remarkably good value etc. But after three years with one I’d had enough of a brittle, noisy ride.

We looked at Octavia petrol 3 months ago and were told that the 1.4 was no longer available, dealers could only order the 1.5TSI. Looking on the Karoq forum, seems that VAG group are struggling to make enough petrol engines (especially the 1.5TSI) following a mass switch from diesel and now there is the added problem with bringing emissions up to spec. In the end we ordered a Scout anyway which is only available in the UK in 2.0 TDI either 150ps manual or 184ps DSG
