1.2 TSI Start Up Noise - But I've Had a New Chain?

Featured Replies

Hello

My Yeti growls sometimes when I start her up, the revs go higher than normal and she immediately calms down. I've Google'd it and lots of posts have come up saying it could be the timing chain etc etc.

However, I had a new one 23,000 miles ago / 3 1/2 years ago...could it be on its way out again? I was informed it was the revised chain blah blah blah.

She never used to do it, I can only really recall it happening some time after the main dealer (lol) changed the spark plugs a while back...

Should I worry? I can't make her do it on command either, so not sure how taking it to a dealer / mechanic will help. Even today in the blistering heat (28 degrees?) she didn't do it...

Thank you...

Two seperate issues here

1) revs going higher and camling down - totally normal and varies depending on the temperature. It'a the engine management orf the direct injection

2) Rattle on startup - for a brief second this can actually be normal whilst oil pressure builds up, can depend on how log the car has been parked up - HOWEVER you mention the main dealer changed the spark plugs - if this was at the same time as an oil change it is possible to misfit/over tighten the oil filter that allows the oil leak back into the sump causing the oil to drain back over night and possibly reduce the oil pressure when running - worth getting another one fitted if it happened after an oil change - must be a revised OEM one ( if from a Skoda dealer it should be)

The Chain tensioner might be the problem, so was it a new kit of chain and tensioner that was fitted.

Then as to the Spark Plugs, is there an issue with the ignition coil and the protection on a lead.

These will be the things needing checked.

There is a TPI on this matter - TPI 2028508/14 (this one is originally from Audi but may be the same as it is the 1.2TFSI).

Get it checked out as soon as possible, it may result in engine failure.

Agreed although looking at the dates in the original post I think this may have already been done (TPI 2028508/14 dates back to 2013)

If the noise came on just after an oil service(replacing spark plugs mentioned in the original post!) check the oil filter first. They have a special valve built in designed to release oil back to the sump through a drain when unscrewed as the filter is mounted upside down, however on fitment if overtightened this partially releases the oil valve whilst still fitted causing drain back AND reduced oil pressure (not good for the chain tensioner or the rest of the engine - you may exhibit bottom end growl!). This is why dealers were so fussy about service history when presented with cam chain issues.

All the EA111 engines can be afflicted with this oil filter issue

PS - hot weather changes the noise of the direct injection on startup

Hello everyone, and thanks for the replies - sorry for my delayed response, if anyone cares.

So the car went to Skoda today for a paid for diagnostic () and it didn't make the noise. They said the chain sounds OK.

However luckily last week when I was booking the appointment, it did when a technician was looking at the car, and he didn't seem too fussed by it. They said everything looks fine with the oil filter, chain etc ?!

For info, the car when I first got it had a Mann oil filter and never made the noise, then it had an official oil filter and started making the noise, now it has a Mann back on it...apparently they checked for the valve thing mentioned above...

Thanks everyone :)

Sometimes the seal from old filter fell off and stay at filter holder, when it happens so, it blocks the oil passage after new filter is fitted on. Then oil pressure is affected and hydraulic timing chain tensioner can not work properly. Not unusual thing even at authorised dealer ... TPI 2033258.

Other possible source of rattle sound can be oil pump chain, here without any tensioner, what a engineering genius ...

The drive chain of the oil pump can sag by 5 mm.

!!! Technical product information 2029226_1.pdf

Concerning the timing chain and tensioner itself, many TPI generated, important is 2037419. Currently last and valid tensioner revision is 03F 109 507 F, previous revision 03F 109 507 D is prohibited to use ...
