I've got used to my reversing sensors only working when they feel like it, and sounding the alarm to say they are not working today.

The last few weeks, though, every time I put the car into reverse, the alarm sounds continuously, until it's put back into gear. The radio display is saying I am about to collide with an obsticle  - even when I'm not!

I've had a tow bar on the car, fitted 1.5 years ago, never made any difference before. I'm just wondering if it's that, or could it be something else?

Seems to have sorted itself out in the past couple of days. Heavy rain here yesterday and today, no screaming!

 

I am seriously thinking of getting the reversing sensors disconnected, and installing a rear view reversing camera instead!  

Has anybody else had this problem? It's started again in the last week or so! :(

 

If it is the factory fitted parking system then I'd expect that if that car was scanned with a proper VW group compliant diagnostic tool, then any logged faults would be revealed and maybe point to just a single sensor which you could replace.

It's certainly worth considering.  I wonder how much it would be for the diagnostic though? It might be easier and cheaper just to replace all four. I would have to pay the garage to do this, though, I know I couldn't undo the bumper and fix it myself. :(

If it is a factory fit system, I'd guess that the sensors would cost round about £45 each if painted maybe even more, there are plenty available on ebay, genuine ones if you find out what the part number is, that is where I bought the sensors I retro fitted to my S4.

 

If it is a dealer aftermarket kit, from Cobra, now traded as Vodaphone, then I wonder if they would be able to source individual parts from that kit?

 

Diagnostics, now if you found someone local to you that owned VCDS, then maybe you could slip them small money to scan your car and print off a faults logged report - that should point to the cause of the problem, I'd guess that a dealer would charge £50> for a quick diagnostics check with their scan tool along with a quote to fix it.

 

Unless you controlled what tasks you wanted the garage to carry out for you, I'd doubt that they would just go ahead and replace sensors without checking what the real problem was, it is not in their interest as if it went wrong and after replacing all four sensors there was still a fault, ie in the cableform, then you would be a bit annoyed with the outcome.

At the moment I am trying to get the drivers side passenger door to unlock with all the rest!  

 

The electrics on this car leave a lot to be desired!

My Roomy doesn't have reversing sensors, but I'd echo the advice to find a fellow-member, (in the VCDS section on here), near to you, and get both the sensors and passenger door lock fault diagnosed at the same time.

 

I've had help from members twice, both were free! First was to re-set the key setup so one click unlocked all 5 doors (not just driver's).

 

Second occasion was to check the compatibility of the aftermarket High Intensity Discharge headlights kit, once fitted.  Latter member emailed me the diagnostic report for free too.

 

If parts needed, I've rung my local Skoda dealer parts counter for a parts quote (and ask for confirmation of the part number(s)) and then source the bits online, and find a good VAG (VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda) specialist garage locally who can fit them at less than main dealer.  Or if you have a reliable small local garage like I have, get them to fit the bits cheaper still!  I've had the driver's door locking assembly go wonky, sourced part online, local guy fitted (and somehow damaged the mirrors control switch, as its part of the door card), replacement switch via local Skoda dealer obtained (at trade price!), same local garage fitted it.
