Timing belt or chain

Featured Replies

Hi.

I have just purchased a fabia 1.4 tdi dsg late 2015. The dealer has no idea if it's a chain driven engine or belt. Also if it's a belt, what the interval should be. The car has done 29,000 miles.

Thank.you.

It's a belt. Not sure of the interval.

Find another dealer. Any dealer who does not know that info clearly has no interest in the brand they are selling. If it was rare model they should find out, its not that hard.

Welcome.

It was not the Dealer was it, just some receptionist on a service desk!.    Best let the Dealer Principal know they have staff with no technical knowledge or qualifications, or the ability to go ask a Technician in the workshop.

But then they know that, they employ them for keyboard or phone skills, or maybe not even that.

Managed to find out that a cam belt change is due at either 5 years or 140,000 miles can you believe.

I believe that at the same time a cam belt is changed the belt tensioner gear and the water pump should be changed as well. This is because the extra cost of adding these items is relatively small because the engine is already stripped down to change the belt. If the water pump is not changed and it seizes up the effect on the engine will be just as catastrophic as if the belt failed requiring a new engine.
