Hi

i have a 1.6 dsl manual octavia 12 plate and recently on way back home my cambelt screwed up and i didnt stop the car there and continued for a mile to reach home.

now been told the engine is too much damaged and need to replace the engine. Its hard to find these the code is cayc.

question is i found one online but thAt engine is from automatic car and my is manual.

please can you tell me if this swap is possible or i have to find a engine from manual car??

bundle of thanks in advance

It is possible, as your car has all the bits to convert the engine over, bear in mind it would be a wise idea to replace the dualmass fly wheel, clutch and slave cylinder at the same time as swapping the engine, it will save a whole lot of hassle and expense doing now then then further up the long and windy road when the clutch is worn out or the DMF starts to rattle from being out.

As I have the same car, I would be interested to know how many miles the failed cambelt has done.

I didnt mean to convert the engine over to auto. What i meant was is it possible i can take just the engine out of auto car and put it in manual car and keep the transmission as manual??

the guys selling the engine told me it wont be possible as i have to change a lot of things i dont know which.

I bought it at 96k miles.

did the water pump and timing belt change at same time through halfords. This was first time change since new so original timing belt lasted 96k miles.

Now timing belt slipped at 140k so roughly the new timing belt only lasted 44k miles!!

the garage guy told me today that halfords machanic kept the belt ‘’too tight’’ which has caused this disaster now.

I am in for a huge bill.. make sure u change urs at time and even if the unfortunate happens stop the car and dont even turn the engine once..

Skoda also say max life of belt is 5 years initially then every four years. It is not just miles. Mine was changed at just under five years and 60k miles due to a sudden massive failure of the water pump. Belt must be changed if contaminated with coolant.

I should be ok now for quite a while. I feel for you in your situation, especially if it was caused by incompetence at the first belt change.

Just out of interest I looked at the procedure for a belt change, and the tensioner setting is easy and very precise, but the mechanic would have needed the correct instructions to set a pointer the right distance from a mark. Not relevant now I guess as you are unlikely to be able to win a claim against Halfords after the time that has elapsed.

i understood what you ment, just the engine you are thinking off getting from an automatic vehicle will have a different flywheel and maybe a few other different items. You would need to swap these over from with the bits from YOUR existing engine before fitting the "new" engine into your car.

The basic engine's them self's will be the same.
