the replacement car

Featured Replies

If you read my last thread (safety in action) you know what happened to my tdi190 SEL last week. Confirmed written off, so I need a replacement. The reasons I bought the original car still hold and I have a debt of gratitude to the vehicle, so, not messing about, I will order a new Superb Estate.

This time it will be an L&K with a dsg box. But which engine? Another tdi 190? With the uncertainty over the future of diesel I am tempted by the 220tsi. Already had valuable feedback on that engine from another member on here.

So what do you think?  I do about 20k p.a. I know I will lose 25% of my mpg with the petrol, but what do I gain? Is performance and refinement in a different league, or should I continue counting the pennies at the pump? And please don't say tsi 280. Just don't tempt me!

Looking forward to some opinions.

The 190 with DSG might not be available..

None of the petrols I believe are currently available to order - Otherwise I'd say TSI 220 or 280 :)

There may be some dealers with stock (or some pre-built stock at port)

You may be limited to the 150TDi for diesel as @Kenny R says

Best to contact your dealer for options :)

It would help to know if you are ordering new or going used as particularly at the moment it will impact your choices (not to mention wait times).

Ah, I didn't realise there were issues here. I'm ordering new and going by the range of engines in the brochure. Are there imminent changes?

I'm afraid it looks like there are, with some significant wait times even if you can order (which some on here are saying they can't). Might be worth thinking about dealer stock - especially if you are looking at the L&K, as there are so few additional options you might find exactly the one you want already in a showroom.

Whoa, it's a bit too early for those type of jokes Jeff!

I think you'll lose less MPG than you think if going from a 190TDI to a 220TSI.

Running/fuel costs would be my biggest concern owing to your mileage.   I've ran diesels for the last 10 years as I too was doing ~25K miles and fuel was paid out of my own pocket.  On several occasions I thought about switching back to petrol but the extra £££'s per month on fuel was something I couldn't afford/justify, on top of the payments for the car.

What's your MPG been to date with the 190?  Are you getting into the 50's regularly or are you one of the 190 owners who see their MPG in the 40's most of the time?  If the latter then I think the 220 is a viable option.

If you're thinking of a petrol then the 220 or 280 will need to be from dealer stock or unsold cars coming through the factory.  The order books are closed on the 220 and 280 (not sure about the 150) .     You could contact Skoda UK and ask what cars they have in port/transit currently unassigned to a dealer/sale.  I believe they can provide a spreadsheet detailing which cars, spec, etc are available.    From there you can go to your preferred dealer and ask them to get it for you.

I changed from a 150TDI to a 220 petrol. Best thing I did re the S3. The 220 has plenty of power unless you drive around like Clarkson and co all the time. It is just so much smoother and quieter. On longer runs I can easily exceed 40 mpg with the 220 whereas in the 150 it rarely went above 50 mpg and on shorter/suburban work it was around 40 for the diesel and I get around 35 for the petrol.

The difference in comfort and smoother application of power gained with the 220 is worth every extra penny of increased fuel costs.

The issue with availability of vehicles at the moment is tied up with the changes in emissions controls. (GPF for petrol engines and real world emissions tests etc).

Some companies already have vehicles that will comply; it seems Skoda have work to do hence the moratorium on taking orders for new vehicles.
