How to fit caliper return springs?

Featured Replies

I zip-tied them to get them to the right position and cut them when they were in the right place. There are holes on the back of the Caliper where the ends sit in.

I‘all see see if I can find a picture.....

Can’t find the picture I had in mind, must be on the list external hard drive I can’t find :(

The plan is, I seem to remember, to know which spring is meant for which side, then fit them with the crook/bend avoiding a screw/bolt head - a long time, though maybe only 2 years 9 months since I fitted my second set this time to wife's 2015 Polo.

That's right rum4mo, the springs are definitely "handed" I bought a pair to fit as mine were missing. However I think I got the ironman ones as I can't get them on for love nor money. Gonna get a new set from TPS and supply my number plate details this time.

@valvedoctor46, looking up a Fabia reg will not sort out getting the correct springs as they were never ever meant to get fitted to these cars, just make sure you get Vw Sharan original model ones, or Galaxy if Ford is easier to get to for parts, or Alhambra if SEAT is nearest .

Like all things in VW Group world, if you have two same items but handed, the one with the lowest part number is for LHS and the highest for RHS - nut they would need to be in a bag or labelled up for that to help.

I was was into this in the very early days so not much advice to help me, as I had a B5 Passat at that time and it had springs fitted from factory, I just bought a set of them - complete failure as they were HUGE!

Okay, fitting these springs:- the cranked section of these springs should fit round or clear the handbrake actuating lever securing nut on the calliper, and that section of the spring should be the part of the springs nearest the centre line of the car.  So, from memory that should mean that the stepped end of each spring fits at the top and the folded over end at the bottom.

Does that help you work out which is for which side and which end is top etc?

Thanks rum4mo, some good info there. I'll check the part numbers on mine, and work out if I'm just not fitting them properly or whether they are indeed the iron man ones.

PS; I don't suppose you still have the part number for the B5 ones to compare to what I have. Cheers.

Just placing the B5 springs near the rear callipers on these cars tells its own story, ie no good for that job.

Mainly people used two different spring types, either from mk1 Sharan etc or Borough mk1, personally I found the SHaran versions adequate and very easy to fit - ie no sore fingers involved and I have small hands/fingers!

Cool, thanks rum4mo. I am convinced I need the Sharon ones now, like the ones listed at the beginning of this thread.

The part numbers of the springs I bought for my wife's August 2015 Polo back in August 2015 were:-

LH Handbrake return spring   7M0 615 295 (from 1998 Sharan) – 1off

RH Handbrake return spring  7M0 615 296 (from 1998 Sharan) – 1off

Edit:- by the way these will fit your car as not much has changed on these rear callipers, I just ordered up what I had ordered for the 2002 Polo back in maybe 2003 or 2004.

I can't explain why Bora turned out written as Borough though, or Sharan as SHaran!!
