2.0 TDCI "pinking"

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am new to this forum. 66 plate 2.0 SE TDCI 4x4 estate.

I keep getting pattering sounds from about 1,500 to 1,750 RPM, which I would call "pinking" if it was petrol. Doesn't matter what mode or gear.

Anybody else experienced it?

I also get occasional hesitation in 2nd gear around 2,000 RPM.

on my old (old) fiesta, it would occasionally act a bit daft and do nothing when you put your foot to the floor.

I always used to drain right down the bottom of the tank and then fill it up with some v power and a smidge of redex.

Always cleared it up. That issue I think was years of being subjected to asda petrol.

Might be worth throwing in a tank or 2 of v power diesel in yours. The detergents in it are supposed to keep things running smooth.

I also get the brief hesitation occasionally in second gear at 2k. Car drives fine though and no warning lights. No idea what causes it.

There is so much electronic wizardry going on its unlikely to be anything to worry about. I also get a bit of hesitation after gearchanges which sometimes feels more pronounced than at other times. At 2000rpm during the gear change the turbo may have dropped out a bit so turbo lag may make it more noticeable.

A deliberate tuning of the engine management to provide "better" CO2 emissions  figures on the soon-to-be phased-out standard EU cycles?

In the early 1990s I was told by a colleague who specialised in engine management that they tuned for best drivability/power/WHY and then added "weak" spots to make the EU figures better - No this wasn't at VW it was an automotive consultancy.

EGR flutter caused by lean burn to reduce emissions. Planting the right foot seems to cure it.
