Leasing - Registered Owner/Keeper

Featured Replies

So I'm in the process of making a claim, and the underwriters have asked me for clarification who the registered keeper on the V5c is. Stated they can't proceed with the claim until they have the information in writing. I don't have the V5 form, never did have it, as the car was leased. The car was leased initially through Hippo Leasing, who then handed over to VWFS and I've been dealing with them since. It would appear when I took insurance out, I put myself as the registered keeper, as for some reason at the time, I genuinely thought I was, just not the registered owner.

VWFS are sending me a copy of the V5 within 48 hours. However, speaking to the insurance company again, they said my policy will increase to £400 to £1000 if I make the change to registered keeper, and because I have a claim (which has't even been started yet). Even though I have protected NCB and they said it wont affect my NCB. The underwriters even said if I falsely provided the wrong information about the keeper, that would make the policy void, unless they believe I have a reasonable explanation. I feel like i'm getting shafted here.....

The insurance company is correct unfortunately. It is up to you to provide the correct information.

Policy costs are higher for leased vehicles where the lease company is the registered company. Some insurance companies will not insure leased vehicles at all.

When we got our leased Yeti I had to swap insurers as my current insurer would not cover me for a car not registered to myself.

I fell foul of a comparison site last year, I listed the car as leased, bought the policy from Privilege and when it came through it listed me as the registered keeper.

Yeah I get that... not sure how I can prove it was a genuine mistake though...?

Did you purchase direct or through a comparison site? Online or over the phone?

My previous vehicle and my current vehicle have both been on PCH deals and the policy costs have been the same as if I owned them.

The only issue I have had with insurance is that my Octavia 1.5tsi SE Technology did not come up on their system, so I had to change insurers, but this had nothing to do with who was the owner/registered keeper.

Depends on the insurer.

Go on the comparison sites and change between Registered Private Owner and Leased with lease company being registered keeper. You will find many insurers will not insure the leased vehicle and many that do will only do so with increased premium.

My mother recently had to insure a leased Skoda due to my Dad being unable to drive due to health issues. She is 75 with no NCD. The difference in cheapest quotes for lease and privately owned was over £300. For me the difference in cheapest quotes (49 and full NCD) was £85.

She has returned the Yeti early before the insurance was due again and now is the registered keeper of a Citigo

Your only option really is to claim you made an error online or that you thought you were registered keeper but the lease company retained the V5.

It's just going to depend on how difficult the insurers want to be.

The bottom line is it's actually the insurer who's been shafted by you !!!  They are quite correct, deliberate or not you provided them with false information and technically you've committed fraud.

If the policy had been taken over the phone then I guess you could argue there was a misunderstanding (you should have checked your documants tho) but if you filled in the form yourself...

I don't know how you prove it was not a geniune mistake - there will be those who deliberately mis-inform the insurer to gain a cheaper quote - how do you distiguish between them and you? Guess you need to speek to a very sympathetic agent.

If your insurer is offering you a way out then my advice would be to take it because the consequence is you could have your insurance cancelled. Apart from having to pay the costs of the accident out of your own pocket, you'd seriously be disadvantaged when buying car insurance in the future - most companies wouldn't touch you with a barge pole, those who would will charge a hefty premium.

Is this your first lease? If it is, I guess you could use that as a potential reason for the confusion. To be fair, I was equally confused when taking this lease to the point I must’ve asked the dealer and my insurer to clarify who was named as what about 5 times.

Yeah my first lease... just hope I can get myself out of this mess unscathed!

I think they have you over a barrel here so not sure what else you can do other than pay what they are asking for.

My Skoda VRS on PCP was the first car I'd ever leased and the documentation made it **very** clear that VWFS were the legal owners of the vehicle and that I needed to ensure that my insurance reflected that.

On a PCP you are usually the registered keeper on the V5. On a PCH the lease company is usually the registered keeper and they retain the V5.

This is where all the confusion comes from as registered keepers and legal owners can be interpreted totally differently.

Motability Finance own my daily driver,

i am the Registered Keeper as any driver that keeps the car and drives it should be, Company cars and fleet cars being different as the Company will be the insurance policy holder

any NIP's, parking tickets etc should come to the Registered Keeper and the person on the Insurance policy not the vehicles Owner / Finance / Lease Company.

If you have a PCH from VWFS and that includes Skoda then they run the fleet and retain the V5. Any parking tickets or speeding fines go to them and you are charged an admin fee for them to process it. They also tax it but you are responsible for insurance.

?

How quickly do they get the NIP to you for you to respond and accept a fixed penalty or what ever?

Fortunately never had to try it.

I don't think it's that relevant.

VWFS receive an NIP saying "they" were doing 46mph in a 40mph zone.

They have the usual three choices; deny, admit or claim they weren't the driver.  In this case, they return the NIP with your details on it as the potential driver.

The clock is then reset.

Relevant if you get one through the door for a car you are registered for,

and you have not yet got one for the car you are the Keeper of but not on the V5.

But no probs, nobody breaks speed limits or gets points or bans.

Yes, that is what they do and charge you an admin fee.
