Looks like horse and cart are the way forward :D

Don't get me started

Thats cheap!  Four years ago,I had no claims etc PLUS the other driver hit me so his insurance footed the bill. Come the next quote, Way over £1200! The original policy was around £500. I asked why it went up so much as I had protected and a no fault claim. Answer.... Its due to higher insurance premium due to more claims made in the postcode.

MY postcode, I asked, or the postcode of the person who hit me OR the postcode where the accident actually happened?  The answer was, yep- you guessed it, all three! Left that insurer, went with another and now I'm back down to around the £500 mark. BTW, I live in East London so getting hit, scraped , broken in to or vandalised is a part of the motoring pleasure!

first car insurance just on 9 years ago on my nans old 1995 1.1 fiesta was £2400

car was worth £50 on a good day!!!!!!

it's a necessary evil unfortunately, pay up and look happy

Had enough of motoring costs now, why I do like my Octavia my next car will be a 1.0 litre Dacia Logan in basic trim at just over £7k. Don't need air con and never bother with the radio and will just go back to having a Garmin sat nav. Cheap reliable motoring, would rather spend the money on my family from now on, friends have the Dacia sandero at £5995 OTR, drives okay and gets them from a to b cheaply.

Have you asked them what their insurance bill is though?

So last year with 10 years NCB your premium was 540 euros.

Assuming a 65% NCB rate for that many years claim free motoring, that gross premium was 1,543 euros.

This year, assuming they have preserved your 65% NCB rate, your gross premium is 2,491 euros.

So your premium got hiked by 61,4% for that claim.

You'd think the insurance industry wasn't regulated, wouldn't you?

No, the NCB protection is good.

What the industry needs is a protective layer around the premium (as per my workings above).

If you claim, even assuming your parked car is hit at 3a.m whilst you're fast asleep in bed, you'll pay more on renewal (protected NCB or not).

It's a racket (and I work in the insurance industry).

From the reading ive done, protecting NCB is a total swindle. I’ve not bothered this year and don’t intend to again.

I am with Direct line 12 years no claims protected, last year I had two claims one where I was smacked up the arse in a queue of traffic (New bumper lights etc) and the second was a new windscreen. I was expecting the worst at renewal but they actually reduced my premium so maybe they're not all Bstards?

My rant was from the perspective of trying to insure a new driver.

Personally I just paid 350 euro fully com with full bonus protection, had a claim two years ago for a 5 series written off from flood damage have always had bonus protection wouldn't be without it.

Every other advert on my local radio station is for mis-sold PPI.

In five years time, those ads will be targetting punters sold NCB protection.

As you say, it's a racket.

It's no good to me locking my NCB at 65% if my base premium is going to rise by 61% (as Sean's did in the example above).

My insurance went up by about 15% this year after claiming for a windscreen last year.

I also don't bother with NCB protection, that's another 15% or so extra onto the policy and as others have found the premium will likely increase anyway...
